As China becomes a major player in UN peacekeeping, women in the country are also pitching in the humanitarian mission. 23-year-old Zhang Xin from southwest China’s Chengdu city is among the female warriors heading outbound to safeguard the needed thousands miles away from home.

Along with other soldiers in China’s peacekeeping detachment based in South Sudan, Zhang was recently conferred the United Nations Peace Medal of Honor for their outstanding performance in implementing UN peacekeeping missions.

Before she joined the military in 2013, Zhang was an undergraduate sophomore in Chengdu College. The girl, however, soon transformed herself into a versatile fighter excelling in shooting and several other military training projects since enlisted.
