An Aussie young couple in Brisbane had been eagerly anticipating the birth of their baby boy, when their dream came crashing down and their stillborn baby was pronounced dead in the womb. The heartbroken mother however insisted on giving birth to the baby, and before parting company with and bidding a reluctant but final farewell to the baby, the whole family took a picture with the stillborn infant. The family hopes to raise awareness about this critically important health issue, and remind pregnant women to do a simple body check, so that tragedies of this sort would never happen again.

The 27-year-old mother Brooke Campbell already has a son, and was planning to add a new member to the family. Campbell had been very fond of taking pictures of her enlarged belly with her family, and had even chosen the name Darcy for her would-be son, but on August 28, Campbell suddenly lost more than 1.7 kilogram of blood, and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. The medical treatment proved to be a failure and the doctor pronounced the beating of the baby’s heart had stopped. The tragedy occurred because of a medical condition known as placental abruption, which resulted in suffocation of the infant when Campbell was experiencing massive loss of blood during the 36th week of pregnancy.

Faced with the unimaginable and unbearable trauma and grief of losing a child, Campbell made a courageous decision of giving birth to the stillborn infant through natural childbirth. “Darcy looks healthy and gorgeous, unlike other newborns who cry, he looks like he is asleep, this really breaks my heart, all I want is to see him take his first breath.” Campbell held her stillborn child in her embrace, crying but unwilling to let go, the family of three then took a photo with the stillborn baby, whilst her son even gave his brother a gentle kiss.

The cause of Darcy’s death was confirmed to be suffocation due to placental abruption. Subsequent blood tests showed Campbell carried a rare blood virus called “Factor V Leiden”. If she had gone for tests earlier, she would have been able to prevent the disease by getting timely treatment during pregnancy. Campbell also spoke out and encouraged other women, if unfortunately they had to go through similar tragedies, “You don’t have to pretend to be tough, go find help and comfort. Talk to friends and family about your pain. Burying your sorrow behind a wall of silence would only make matters worse.”
