While a woman was celebrating her boyfriend's birthday, she was unexpectedly hurt by him because he got drunk.

The man, Joshua Rossbottom, 30, from Manchester, has launched a terrible attack on his unnamed partner using a 3ft vase thrown at her face and shoved her into a wall after drinking in July.

Rossbottom was accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and another of intimidating a witness. He pleaded guilty and was jailed for nine months.

The couple met in March 2016 through a dating website and started living together one month before the incident.

The prosecutor, Andrew Mackintosh, said the couple would argue but Rossbottom had never had used physical violence against her before.

On 25 July,  they celebrated the defendant's birthday drinking with friends in Manchester city centre. The woman went upstairs to go to bed at 11 pm and the party continued.

Mackintosh told the court, "At around 3am she was woken by a disturbance and found furniture and glasses had been smashed."

"She began to tidy up and the defendant argued with her," he added. "He pushed her backwards and she hit her head against a wall. He then picked up a vase and threw it at her, striking her above the right eyebrow."

Police were called the next morning by an anonymous source, the court heard.

Rossbottom had called the woman after he knew he was investaged, "What the f*** are you saying I did? You watch, I'm coming for you."

In a victim impact statement, the complainant said she had lost her job as a result of the injuries.
