But the twisted and brutal father may get away with punishment because 'disorganized' detectives delayed the investigation and failed to collect vital evidence.
A 13-month-old English baby girl Poppi Worthington died of suffocation shortly after she was sexually assaulted by her father Paul Worthington.
The horrific ordeal happened on 12 December 2012 in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, Poppi’s mother was woken up by Poppi screaming and Worthington came down for help. They called an ambulance and rushed the baby to hospital but she was pronounced dead. Medics noted the child was bleeding from her bottom.
Later in the inquest, the coroner concluded that Poppi had died from asphyxiation and found suspicious injuries in her anus. The coroner ruled on Monday that she had been sexually assaulted by her father just before her death. Worthington brought her into his bed to abuse her and she was unable to breathe properly afterward.
However, Worthington may never be put on trial because police failed to collect forensic evidence. The police didn't start investigating properly and arrested Worthington and Poppi’s mother until more than eight months after her death. They even didn't recover Poppi's nappy and pyjama bottoms.
In the court, Worthington refused to answer 252 questions and claimed he feared his life as the public got furious about the death. Although satisfied that she was sexually assaulted before her death, he concluded she did not die immediately afterwards and that penetration did not cause her death.
The coroner said a conclusion of unlawful killing was not available to him as he was not sure beyond reasonable doubt that Poppi died from an act of murder or manslaughter. Poppi’s mother hoped the CPS would take 'another look' at the case.
