Snakes are notorious for appearing in large numbers come summertime, especially in more rural country areas. As such, one might be able to imagine the shock when a suburban community in Guangdong, Panyu discovered thousands of little snakes were to be found around every corner of the area: from ditches and sewers to classrooms and second-storey levels of residential homes.
It turned out that one resident of the neighbourhood who purchased a large number of snake eggs wanted them to breed under his control, thereby increasing their numbers (and also the profit he would make by selling them). However, unbeknownst to the egg-owner, the eggs hatched prematurely due to the unexpectedly sweltering heat, thus releasing a thousand tiny snakes into the community.
According to local reports, the last few days were complete havoc for the neighbourhood: hundreds of snakes were captured, although quite a lot of them are still at large in the sewers, clogging up the waterworks. Even the police were dispatched to go on "snake-catching duty".
Aside from catching live snakes, sulphur powder was added to streets around the community, since although the snakes were not inherently venomous, live snakes are still giving the townsfolk quite the scare, as they can grow up to and even exceed the lengths of 30 cm.
Nearby residents are now looking forward to getting over and done with the infestation, so they may finally return to the "good ol' days" of normality.
