Positive upturn trend of China's economy not to change: spokesman

The long-term positive upturn trend of China's economy is not to change, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin at a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.

Wang made the remarks in response to reports that since the National Bureau of Statistics released China's economic data for the first quarter of this year, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank and many other international financial institutions have lifted their China 2024 growth forecasts.

"China's economy got off to a good start in the first quarter this year. Indicators for the 'troika' of consumption, investment and export operated well, and the four major macroeconomic indicators of growth, employment, inflation and balance of payments remained stable on the whole, presenting a vibrant spring scenario of sustained economic recovery and growth. In the first quarter, China's GDP expanded 5.3 percent year on year, in which domestic demand contributed 85.5 percent to the economic growth, making it a main force driving the economic growth. A report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development predicted that China will realize its goal of around-5-percent economic growth this year. The Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index report released by American management consulting firm Kearney showed that China's ranking has jumped from the seventh place last year to the third place. A Bloomberg report also showed that in the next five years, China will take the biggest share in the world's new economic activities," said Wang.

"Looking ahead, the long-term positive upturn trend of China's economy will remain unchanged. We believe that with the continuous progress of high-quality development and high-level opening-up, China's economy will quicken its pace in transformation and upgrading on the basis of steady progress and make even greater contributions to the world economy," he said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit is of great importance and it comes at a very crucial moment, said Aleksandar Vucic, Serbian President during an interview on Wednesday in the capital city of Belgrade.

President Xi is scheduled to pay a state visit to Serbia in the coming week at the invitation of President Vucic. The two heads of state are expected to hold talks on further elevating the bilateral ties.

Mentioning that he has asked President Xi to visit Serbia for 15 times over the past eight years, Vucic said that he is very happy towards the much-expected visit, during an interview with China Central Television (CCTV).

"You know how many times I was asking President Xi to come to Serbia since 2016? I was asking him exactly in different forms, face to face, telephone conversations, letters. I was asking him to visit Serbia 15 times and I cannot explain to you how happy I am. Even when it is during these difficult times for my country, this is something that I expect with a lot of joy, hope, and happiness for my people and for my country," said the president.

Vucic said that he has many topics to discuss with President Xi, adding that Serbian people are happy towards Xi's arrival and the genuine feelings stem from close cooperation between the two countries.

"This visit is coming in the very right moment. I have many things to talk, many things to discuss with the President, and hope that he'll be in a good mood and hope that he'll feel at home here in our country. And here he's going to see people, people that are profoundly grateful to him, to China, that are happy because of our cooperation. You cannot hide it, you cannot lie [to] anyone on this. And it's not about only leadership, it's about these vibes and this energy that has been conveyed and transferred to the peoples' level and that is of utmost importance," said Vucic.
