Innovative irrigation technology transforms farming efficiency

Farmers along the Hexi Corridor, a major agricultural producer in northwest China's Gansu Province, no longer worry about irrigation water thanks to a newly-adopted technology.

In Hanzuo Town of Wuwei City, shallow-buried thin tubes stretch across wheat fields, precisely delivering water and fertilizer to the plants. These tubes are disposable and low-cost, and do not interfere with mechanized operations.

"It does not waste a single drop of water. It is really water-saving," said Liu Xuemei, a farmer in Hanzuo Town.

Since 2022, local authorities have been building high-standard farmlands by equipping them with water pools, reservoirs and pipelines for integration water and fertilizer delivery.

"Previously, we were nervous about irrigation. Now with this irrigation system, we are delighted to see the green wheat fields," said Liu.

This year, every mu of farmland can save 100 cubic meters of water. The water saved from the 620,000 mu of high-standard farmland in the whole Liangzhou District can irrigate another 160,000 mu of farmland.

"Correspondingly, our planting concepts, income-earning ways, operational models and industrial development have all changed," said Wang Xingpeng, Party secretary of Hanzuo Town.

Shanghai, China's financial hub, and several other eastern Chinese cities have been flooded due to Typhoon Pulasan, and drainage efforts are in full swing.

Pulasan, the 14th typhoon of the year, made its second landfall in Shanghai's Fengxian District at around 21:45 on Thursday after first making landfall earlier that day in Zhejiang Province.

Since midnight on Friday, parts of Shanghai's Pudong New Area have experienced increasingly heavy rainfall, resulting in flooded streets and temporary school closures.

Local authorities have intensified drainage efforts on waterlogged roads and in swamped neighborhoods.

Similarly, in neighboring Jiangsu Province, Rugao, a county-level city, was hit by a downpour from 7:00 to 17:00 on Friday. By 18:00, local firefighters had responded to more than 60 cases, carrying out drainage and rescue operations.
