Two adorable giant pandas from Liyang city in east China's Jiangsu Province have captured the hearts of fans after their video of engaging in bamboo shoot digging and feasting was posted online.

These two cuddly pandas, named Hua Li and Xing An, were born in 2013 and are now living in the city's Nanshan Zhuhai scenic area. Since late March, during the bamboo shoot mushrooming season, they have been observed digging up bamboo shoots themselves and displaying amusing behavior such as rolling and exercising on the railings. Their footage has been shared online, attracting many viewers and leading to a growing number of panda lovers coming to see them in person.

"Every morning at 6:00, the pandas go to the outdoor enclosure where many bamboo shoots grow after it rains. The two of them can dig up to 20 to 30 shoots a day," said Li Zixiao, a panda keeper at the panda pavilion in the Nanshan Zhuhai scenic area.

In the outdoor enclosure, there are not only toys for pandas but also naturally grown bamboo and bamboo shoots. Also, five full-time keepers are responsible for their daily meals.

"The pandas have fixed meals every day, consisting of apples, carrots, bamboo shoots, steamed buns, and supplements with additional trace elements," said Ma Hongjun, curator of the panda pavilion.

China Coast Guard conducts maritime rescue drill to enhance lifesaving capabilities

2024-05-13 21:29 Last Updated At:22:07

The China Coast Guard conducted a maritime rescue exercise in waters around the Huangyan Island in the South China Sea to enhance its lifesaving capabilities, especially in complex situations.

During the exercise, officers aboard the Coast Guard's Chuanshan vessel found "someone" drowning in water, and dispatched rescuers to salvage him with a life buoy and rescue ropes, and to pull him out of the water.

After approaching the “drowning person”, rescuers managed to cover him with an insulation blanket and transfer him to the vessel to prevent hypothermia, and upon pulling him onto the deck, they carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.

"As the Coast Guard takes charge of maritime rescue, we conduct such drills to improve the ability of the commanding officers on the vessel to organize and direct a maritime rescue operation, improve the coordination capability of all crew, and meet the requirement for quick response to emergency situations in which fishermen have fallen into water by accident. The waters where we observe have a bad weather condition featuring strong wind and high waves, so we will properly set some dangerous and difficult courses in the training to improve our officers' ability to respond to complex maritime situations so that those drowning ones can be saved smoothly in our rescue operations," said Wu Hongri, political commissar of the Chuanshan vessel.

The Coast Guard officers and men on duty in waters around the Huangyan Island regularly receive maritime lifesaving training to optimize the process and improve their rescue preparedness in light of the actual situations at sea.
