Chinese EVs gain traction in Mexico

Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) have been popular among Mexican consumers in recent years due to their good quality and affordability.

Chinese auto makers have enjoyed rapid growth in the Mexican market. Most of them offer EVs to local consumers with some of the brands setting up factories in the country.

A young couple living in the Mexican City bought a Chinese EV a year ago. This decision was made after comprehensive research and some comparison shopping.

They are really satisfied with their decision.

"I love the performance of the engine and this saves me a lot of money. I'm also really into the futuristic features of this vehicle. Charging is so easy as we have a charging pile at home. It was installed by the EV company free of charge. If we need to charge our car during our outings on weekends, we can always find charging piles in shopping malls or other public spaces," said the young man.

"I am always a little worried when I drive backwards, so I am happy to know that there is a 360 camera installed on this car. It is really practical. I have offered many of my friends a ride in this car. They think that the material reduces noises well, the exterior design is beautiful and the color is also special," said the woman.

It's not just ordinary households that favor Chinese EVs. The car-hailing industry in Mexico is also embracing EVs. Many taxi drivers think that Chinese EVs are of high quality and are also affordable.

"When I am asleep at night, I will charge my car. The next morning, it will be fully charged. The battery lasts about eight hours. After I started my career as a taxi driver, I earn a lot more money. The maintenance fee of EV is lower than that of fuel-powered vehicles. Passengers love taking my car, because it is more environmentally-friendly," said a taxi driver.

Many passengers also go for EVs when hailing a car.

"It's cheaper to choose EV when hailing a car. EVs also have better designs," said a passenger.

Recently, auto makers including BYD, Jianghuai Automobile and Tesla announced the launch of the Electro Mobility Association (EMA) to promote the production and purchase of EVs in Mexico.

Their goal is to make sure 50 percent of vehicles sold in the country by the end of 2030 will be EVs.

Statistics from this association suggest that the seven members of EMA represent over 40,000 of EVs in Mexico and over 32,000 charging piles installed in the country by the end of 2023.

Mother's Day surge drives flower industry boom in south China

2024-05-12 19:53 Last Updated At:20:07

The flower industries in south China's Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are ushering in a peak sales season of the year thanks to a Mother's Day surge.

Retail and wholesale florists in both Guangdong and Guangxi saw significant increases in sales on Sunday -- the Mother's Day, which is seen as the start of a peak season for the flower business.

In the tech hub of Shenzhen in Guangdong, carnations, roses and Chinese peonies are the most popular among customers this year, and many local florists saw a boost to their transactions from the large shopping crowds.

"Sales here have been three to five times of that on an ordinary day. We have done all the work to make bouquets in advance. We expect 150 to 300 orders [today]," said Chen Qi, manager of a flower shop in the city's Nanshan District.

Zhou Yingqin, a wholesaler, said pink flowers are in hot demand particularly so far this year and the prices of many varieties have surged as a result.

"Flower prices will basically stay where they are throughout May because of the back-to-back holidays -- the Mother's Day and the May 20 Day (a romantic day seen by couples in China). I expect the demand to exceed supply," said Zhou, who is also in Nanshan District.

As May 12 also marks the International Nurses Day, various flower wholesale markets in Nanning, the regional capital of Guangxi, were bustling with activity as demand for fresh-cut flowers soared. And as in Guangdong, the prices of carnations and Chinese peonies in the city have also surged.

"Because of the coincidence of the Mother's Day and the International Nurses Day, sales are bound to surge, tripling or even quadrupling. We expect to sell hundreds of, even 1,000 bouquets [today]," said a local flower shop manager surnamed Tang.

Another said her shop offers a wider selection of flower arrangements this year, given the increasing demand.

"There has been a 10-percent increase in orders so far this year compared with previous years. Purple and pink flowers are very popular this year," she said.
