Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Sunday that the brain implant being developed by his neurotech startup Neuralink might be approved for general use in the coming few years.
Elon Musk visited Beijing at the invitation of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) on Sunday.
During a meeting with CCPIT president Ren Hongbin, Musk said that safety is one of the most crucial issues in advancing the development of Neuralink's brain implant that aims to help patients with severe paralysis control external technologies using only neural signals.
Neuralink implanted its device in a human for the first time in January.
"Whenever you put something in a human, it takes a long time to prove the safety. I think it may be coming like in a year or two, and it can be approved for general use," he said.
Meanwhile, Ren highlighted that China attaches much importance to providing overseas-funded enterprises with a favorable environment.
"I just want to thank you for your participation in the first edition of the China International Supply Chain Expo. I think the supply chain is sort of the hot topic, not [only] in China, but worldwide. The Chinese government pays much attention on fostering a market-oriented and also rule-based business environment. Associations, institutions will provide a very enabling environment for the foreign-invested companies including Tesla," said Ren.
