The film screening of "Gold or Shit", winner of the Tiantan awards, the top honor of the 14th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), was held on Saturday in the Chinese capital.
This comedy film tells the story of a disillusioned young man in Beijing who faces setbacks in both work and relationships, which leads to his return to his hometown in a state of despair. Not only does he need to re-establish intimacy with his family, but he also needs to explore more possibilities for his own future. After encountering numerous setbacks, he unexpectedly reunites with his high school classmate, which leads to unforeseen changes in his life.
The director talked about how captivating the story is and what he likes the most about this film.
"When we were writing this story, I felt like the most attractive thing about it is its novelty. Every time when we were creating plot twists, I felt really excited. Therefore, I believe the happiest thing about being a director is that you have a good script and work with the best actors and actresses," said movie director Long Fei.
The playwright mentioned the immense contributions of the actors and actresses in the movie.
"Hu Ge is a funny guy. His performances in the movie just came naturally from him. Yuanyuan learned about how to hold a camera from a documentary crew. In fact, many of the behind-the-scene parts in the movie were filmed by her. Jin Jing did a lot of workouts and faked a tan for her part. All of them have given their character a new life," said Huang Jia, the playwright of this film.
Meanwhile, a jury of the Tiantan awards weighed in on why this movie stood out among the 1,509 entries from 118 countries and regions.
"This movie will win both a high box office and a good reputation due to the contribution of the playwright, director, actors and actresses. It boasts both commercial value and artistic value," said Ma Li, a jury member of the award and a renowned Chinese actress.
"[This movie] very much shows the idea of diversity in which a Chinese story could communicate to any corner of the world in which people could be cathartic afterwards, like I was when I've saw it," said Emir Kusturica, jury president of Tiantan Awards.
The movie "Gold or Shit" will hit the big screen on June 8 in China.
