Large scale Artificial Intelligence (AI) models have started to show how they have empowered the automotive industry at the ongoing 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, or Auto China.

Their intelligent and personalized features have made driving safer and more convenient, offering visitors fresh experience.

Geely, a major car manufacturer in China, is conducting relevant research showing the potential for AI to transform driving experience.

In Geely Automobile Research Institute based in Ningbo, east China's Zhejiang Province, a diver could literally talk to NEV through an AI-powered digital human on the screen inside the car, which could perform navigation, smart rout planning, air conditioning, entertainment and many other functions as the driver talk to it. Its lips even matched the words.

The cartoon-imaged digital human serves as a medium for the driver to interact with the vehicle. When you talk to it, you may feel as if it is not just an intelligent assistant, but more like a pal with emotions and personality.

And AI can offer much more than the hyper-realistic digital human. In the future it can realize intelligent automation of the entire vehicle, like the whole-vehicle intelligent diagnosis and service, such as proactively reporting when the tire pressure is low.

The large scale AI models are making driving smarter.

For instance, when you have to park in a very tight space, are common scenario in many urban areas across China, the AI model could take over the steering wheel and perform automatic parking with the support of sensors and radars all around the car.

"We've integrated powerful multimodal dialog capability, communication capability and various memory capabilities, plus autopilot driving and chassis control capabilities into our system, to enable easier operation for our clients," said Jiang Zhonglin, chief engineer of AI research at Geely Automobile Research Institute.

Auto China this year is to witness the release of 117 new cars and 41 concept automobiles.

More than 80 percent of the vehicles on display are new energy vehicles (NEVs).

Foreign enterprises in China are expanding investments and expressing confidence in the market and innovation, while showing bullish performance in the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) domain.

The ESG concept has been gaining global traction in recent years. On Tuesday, the China Media Group (CMG) released the "Report on ESG Actions of Foreign Enterprises in China," the first report of its kind by a third-party institution in China, which recognized top ESG performers among foreign and regional enterprises.

The report evaluates the ESG performance of foreign-invested enterprises and firms from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan on the Chinese mainland. It also announced the "Top 20 ESG Pioneers among Foreign and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Enterprises in China" during the event.

"ESG has increasingly become a globally recognized business management concept because environmental issues are a common challenge for humanity, and enterprises need to transform," said Wang Yuanfeng, director of the Carbon Neutral Technology and Strategy Research Center of Beijing Jiaotong University.

The report is a key part of the CMG Financial and Economic Program Center's "Investing in China" event series.

During the event, business leaders highlighted China's massive market, comprehensive industrial system, and continually improving business environment, which enhance their commitment to investing and expanding in the country.

"In the past year, we have invested 6 billion U.S. dollars in China, proving that China's innovation has reached a very high level. This is also a significant driving force that attracts foreign enterprises to China, especially in the pharmaceutical industry, to further increase investment and extensive cooperation," said Huang Bin, vice president of AstraZeneca China.

"China has a very strong sense in innovation, and its industrial chain ranks among the best in the world. This further strengthens our confidence and determination to develop in China," said Zhao Bingdi, president of Panasonic Corporation of China.
