Average daily cross-regional transport during Labor Day holiday to exceed 270 mln

The average daily cross-regional transport is expected to exceed 270 million passenger trips during the upcoming five-day Labor Day holiday which will start from May 1, said officials from the Ministry of Transport in Beijing on Monday.

With road transportation still being the main force, officials said the nationwide transport during Labor Day holiday will show four features.

According to officials, the total number of trips on roads will be large, with self-driving trips accounting for high proportion.

The average daily cross-regional passenger flow during the holiday is expected to surpass 270 million, exceeding the levels of the same period in 2023 and in 2019, of which the proportion of self-driving travel is expected to reach about 80 percent.

Transportation during the holiday is expected to concentrate on road network, with many inter-provincial trips, said the ministry officials

As estimated, the average daily traffic volume on national expressways during the holiday is expected to reach around 63.5 million, about 1.8 times the normal traffic volume, and the peak traffic volume is expected to be 67 million vehicles.

Officials said the commercial passenger transport is expected to rapidly resume and run at a high level.

The average daily commercial passenger traffic is expected to exceed 57 million, exceeding the level of the same period in 2023 and reaching 90 percent of the same period in 2019, said the officials, adding that the passenger volume of railway and civil aviation is expected to exceed the level of the same period in 2019.

Officials of the transport ministry also said a tidal characteristics will be showed in holiday transportation, with congestion periods being obvious.

"The departure and return travels during the Labor Day holiday will have strong directionality in time and flow distribution. Congestion periods are expected to be 10:00 to 12:00 in the first two days and 16:00 to 18:00 in the last two days. Expressways in and out of densely populated cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou and the expressways linking airports in these cities are prone to congestion and slowdowns. Expressways around tourism cities like Chongqing, Hangzhou, Xi'an, Changsha, and Qingdao, and roads leading to popular scenic spots are expected to bear large traffic flows," said Guo Sheng, deputy head of Road Bureau of the Ministry of Transport of China.

The two heads of state had an in-depth exchange of views on the Ukraine crisis.

Xi elaborated on China's consistent position and efforts to promote the political settlement of the Ukraine issue, stressing that to deal with any major issue, it is necessary to address both the symptoms and the root causes, and to plan for the present as well as for the long term.

He said the core of the Global Security Initiative is advocating the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and the fundamental solution to the Ukraine issue is to promote the establishment of a new balanced, effective and sustainable security architecture.

Xi said China supports the convening of an international peace conference recognized by Russia and Ukraine at an appropriate time with equal participation and fair discussion of all options, so as to push for an early political settlement of the Ukraine issue, and China stands ready to continue to play a constructive role in this regard.

Putin introduced the relevant views and positions of Russia, saying that Russia appreciates China's objective, just and balanced position on the Ukraine issue and welcomes China to continue to play an important and constructive role in the political settlement of the issue. Russia is committed to resolving the Ukraine issue through political negotiations and is willing to demonstrate sincerity and maintain close communication with China in this regard, he said.

Xi said that over the years, they have had many meetings and every exchange has been candid, in-depth and fruitful.

Xi said he is ready to stay in close contact with President Putin and work together to steer the development of China-Russia relations in the right direction, guide the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for the new era to achieve steady and lasting progress, bring more benefits to the two peoples, and contribute to world security and stability.
