China, France have huge potential in nuclear energy cooperation: experts

With a decades-long nuclear cooperation, China and France have huge potential in deepening the partnership amid global green transition.

In Fuqing City, east China's Fujian Province, six units produce 50 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year at a nuclear power plant.

In an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant's chief operator Shang Yubai introduced the evolution of nuclear technology in China, mentioning the French side's role.

"These four units are M310 units, a technology originally imported from France. These four units gradually started commercial operation between 2014 and 2017. The two units over there, which look noticeably different, use China's independently-developed Hualong One technology," said Shang.

Speaking with CGTN, Luo Qingping, chairman of China Institute of Nuclear Industry Strategy (CINIS), said the two countries, which have worked closely on nuclear power, are both global leaders in the technology.

"China and France have a 40-year history of nuclear cooperation. France and China rank (the) second and third globally in operating nuclear power capacity. China also holds the world's largest installed capacity for nuclear power under construction. They are both major nuclear powers," he said.

China and France hold a positive outlook on the power, because it generates massive energy on a minimal carbon footprint.

"Both China and France have set carbon neutrality goals. China aims for 2060, while France targets 2050. At the 2024 Global Nuclear Energy Summit, more countries recognized nuclear energy as a practical choice for climate change mitigation and stable electricity supply," said Luo.

After French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to China last year, the two countries began jointly drafting a forward-looking study on nuclear energy and low-carbon development.

Luo said the bluebook shares both countries' rich experience in nuclear energy development, serving as a reference for other nations and advancing the global transition to clean, low-carbon energy.

China will always be a reliable friend and partner to Tajikistan, no matter how the international landscape may evolve, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi when meeting with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Duschanbe on Saturday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, first conveyed President Xi’s cordial greetings and best wishes to Rahmon.

He said President Rahmon paid a state visit to China and attended the China-Central Asia Summit last May, the two heads of state jointly announced to establish a China-Tajikistan community with a shared future with long standing friendship, shared weal and woe and mutually benefit. This defined a clear goal for bilateral relations development and sent a positive signal to peoples of two countries and the world.

China will continue to firmly support Tajikistan in following development path tailored to its national realities and oppose external interference in Tajikistan’s internal affairs. No matter how the international landscape may evolve, China will always be a reliable friend and partner to Tajikistan, said Wang.

For his part, Rahmon asked Wang to convey his heartfelt greetings to President Xi.

He said promoting relations with China is a priority of Tajikistan’s diplomatic policy. Tajikistan is committed to the one-China principle and upholding that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.

Tajikistan hopes to have close high-level communications with China, enhance cooperation in trade, energy, mineral resources, transportation, agriculture, green industry, artificial intelligence and other areas, fight the three forces of terrorism, separatism and extremism and continuously expand and strengthen China-Tajikistan comprehensive strategic partnership, said the president.

Tajikistan is ready to closely coordinate with China and support each other at multilateral platforms, Rahmon said.

Wang said China actively supports President Rahmon’s four development strategies of energy, transportation, agriculture and industrialization.

China attaches importance to Tajikistan’s cooperation demands, and is dedicated to exploring cooperation in emerging industries to help Tajikistan improve economic development, said Wang.

China would like to deepen security cooperation with Tajikistan and resolutely combat all forms of terrorism, he added.
