一名不願透露身分、旅居澳門的金正男好友指出，金正男精通5國語言，但朋友間相處話題從來不談政治，他也沒有任何「北韓皇太子」的架子，與大家相處十分融洽，「就像是住在澳門的普通鄰居一樣。」

該友人又指，金正男的行蹤始終很神秘，為了避開媒體，他經常會變換居所。友人表示，與他相處的這10年來，從未聽他開口提起弟弟金正恩，但與外界傳聞不同的是，2011年父親金正日去世後，金正男曾回過北韓一趟，但對於自己的身世及敏感的政治議題，他從不願多談。
據友人描述，金正男靠著金正日留給他的錢，平時生活過得相當愜意、富足，在澳門最少有5、6棟別墅，而他們每次見面，都是由金正男包下所有帳單，他的資產似乎足夠花上一輩子。
