A South African bodybuilding champion has died from horrific injuries after he attempted to backflip but went badly wrong during a competition.

Sifiso Lungelo Thabete, a 23-year-old South African bodybuilder, broke his neck after landing on his head in front of horrified crowd. According to Body Building South Africa, "Sifiso had a signature backflip" he liked to perform on stage.

In a video posted online, Sifiso is seen entering a gymnasium and whipping up the watching crowd by flexing his muscles. Then he runs on to a gym mat and jumps in the air to attempt the back flip. His body failed to gain enough momentum to rotate and landed on the back of his head. Worried officials raced toward him when he remained motionless on the mat.

The horrific accident happened on Saturday at a competition in South Africa. Sifiso was a former IFBB junior world champion and was tipped for a big future.
