Couple in New York finds stolen safe under their trees full of diamonds, gold, jade and cash

"A couple of people asked us, 'Why did you return it?'," Maria said. "It wasn't even a question. It wasn't ours."

A couple from on Staten Island, New York, found a treasurable safe buried under trees at their backyard after a deer ate the green, leading them to plant new ones around the perimeter of the yard.

"It was really prominent when the deer ate away all the foliage,'" Matthew said. They thought roots were tangled under the trees initially so they brought in a tree company, but they soon realised it was a safe full of cash and jewels.

Maria Colonna-Emanuel and her husband said they were like a childhood dream come true when finding the treasure. There are including diamonds, gold, jade and cash, costing over USD$52,000 dollars.

The couple also found a piece of paper with an address inside and they discovered was connected to a home on their block.

"First I knocked on the door and I asked them if they were ever robbed and they said they were," Matthew said.

They returned the box to the owner after the New York Police Department confirmed their neighbours were robbed in 2011, with a safe with $52,000 inside.
