It's a dog eat dog world out there.
In the animalistic realm where it's 'survival of the fittest', every day is a bloody battle for life - One such scene was captured by safari guide James Nampaso in the Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya.
In order to sate the apex predators' bottomless stomachs, the pack of lions took a giraffe and its newborn child as easy prey, and mercilessly isolated the baby calf from its mother before eating it alive.
In the face of the huge giraffe mother, however, even the lions dare not act rashly. The pack of adult lionesses and young lions surround the giraffes, whilst the desperate mother giraffe relentlessly kicks to ward off the lions with its strong legs, in an attempt to protect its child of only a few days.
Unfortunately, being vastly outnumbered, no matter how vigilant the giraffe was, the lions would eventually find a weak spot and pounce on it. One lioness took its opportunity, pouncing onto the back of the giraffe mother, gripping and biting it endlessly, causing the mother to wraith around in panic, and forcing it to run away.
The poor calf was therefore isolated from its mother, forced to fend for itself. With it being so small, it stood little chance and was quickly slaughtered and gorged on, becoming the pack's lunch for the day.
Nampaso explained that newborn animals being hunted as prey is not a common sight; he puts it down to the late migration of animals this year, causing a lower-than-usual number of prey in the savanna.
