Magic finally get a playoff game at home; OKC, Indy on ropes

Orlando returned to Florida with home-court advantage.

Indiana and Oklahoma City are seeking some home-court magic.

A trio of Game 3s in the NBA on Friday night — Toronto at Orlando, Boston at Indiana and Portland at Oklahoma City — have three very different story lines. The Magic got a split of their first two games with the Raptors, the Pacers are reeling after a late-game collapse in Game 2 left them trailing the Celtics 2-0, and the Thunder have seemed completely out of sorts as they've gotten into a 2-0 hole against the Trail Blazers.

"I still don't think we understand how good a team we can be when we play well," Magic coach Steve Clifford said.

Indiana had a great chance at getting a split slip away late in Game 2 at Boston. The Pacers have now lost 16 of their last 24 games overall, are looking at a fourth consecutive first-round ouster and have never won a series after losing the first two games.

Having said all that, the Celtics are leery of a letup.

"We know anything can happen in the playoffs," Boston guard Kyrie Irving said.

The Thunder have shot the ball horribly from the outside, but more than anything else have been doomed by one bad quarter in each of their first two games against the Trail Blazers. In Game 1 (a five-point loss), they lost the first quarter by 14. In Game 2 (a 20-point loss), they lost the third quarter by 16.

Oklahoma City is 2-14 this season when shooting 41 percent or less, which includes both of the two games. Despite that, Thunder star Paul George said he has a simple message for teammates.

"Keep shooting," George said. "We're going to make shots. Keep shooting. We missed shots, so what? Keep shooting."

A look at Friday night's games:

RAPTORS AT MAGIC

Series tied, 1-1. Game 3, 7 p.m. EDT, ESPN.

NEED TO KNOW: Orlando is playing its first home playoff game since May 5, 2012 and will seek its first home playoff win since April 26, 2011.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Magic center Nikola Vucevic has not been much of a factor so far, going a combined 6 for 21 in the first two games. Expect Orlando to run a lot for him early in an effort to get him in rhythm.

INJURY WATCH: Toronto may be getting Patrick McCaw (right thumb sprain) back for Game 3, which will bolster the bench. McCaw — who played in 21 playoff games with Golden State over the last two seasons — last played March 28.

PRESSURE IS ON: Still Toronto. All the Raptors did in Game 2 — a blowout, no less — was escape a bigger hole. Magic fans have waited nearly a decade for a playoff game. The atmosphere will be intense and Orlando is 13-1 in its last 14 games at home.

CELTICS AT PACERS

Celtics lead, 2-0. Game 3, 8:30 p.m. EDT, ABC.

NEED TO KNOW: Boston is 36-1 all-time in best-of-seven series when it holds a 2-0 lead. The loss? Against Cleveland, in last season's Eastern Conference finals.

KEEP AN EYE ON: The Pacers' rebounding. They've been completely outplayed in that department, one of the reasons why they're in this 0-2 hole. Boston shot only 58 percent from the line in the first two games, though obviously that didn't hurt the Celtics.

STAT QUIRK: Through all teams' first two games of this year's playoffs, Boston ranked 15th out of the 16 clubs in points per game. Luckily for the Celtics, Indiana was 16th.

PRESSURE IS ON: Myles Turner. The Pacers' center has 13 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks — not averages, totals — in the first two games, and he's taken more 3-point tries than 2-point tries. He's got to come up big in Game 3.

TRAIL BLAZERS AT THUNDER

Trail Blazers lead, 2-0. Game 3, 9:30 p.m., ESPN.

NEED TO KNOW: Since losing in Oklahoma City on Feb. 11, Portland has gone 11-5 on the road. The Thunder didn't reach the 100-point mark in either of the first two games; the last time they didn't reach triple digits in consecutive games was back in mid-November.

KEEP AN EYE ON: The 3-point line. Oklahoma City is shooting 16.4 percent from beyond the arc in this series; the last time a team shot worse than that in a first-round matchup was 1991, when San Antonio was 3 for 26 (.115) in its 3-1 series loss to Golden State.

HEAD TO HEAD: Thunder star Russell Westbrook and Portland star Damian Lillard have gone head-to-head 25 times. Lillard's team leads, 13-12.

PRESSURE IS ON: Westbrook. He took the blame after the Game 2 loss. It will be extremely interesting to see what Westbrook's floor plan is for Game 3.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Paolo Banchero had 31 points and 14 rebounds, Jalen Suggs added 24 points and the Orlando Magic handed Cleveland the worst playoff loss in franchise history, winning 121-83 on Thursday night to cut the Cavaliers’ lead to 2-1 in their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Franz Wagner finished with 16 points and eight assists for the Magic, who led by 43 points in the fourth quarter on the way to the third-largest margin of victory in a playoff game. They earned their first playoff victory since 2019 and the first on their home floor since April 26, 2011.

They can even the series with a victory at home Sunday.

Jarrett Allen had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Cavaliers, who shot 39% from the field and 23.5% from 3-point range. Caris LeVert added 15 points and Donovan Mitchell had 13 points and seven assists.

76ERS 125, KNICKS 114

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid scored 50 points, making all four 3-point attempts and scoring 18 in a potential series-shifting third quarter to lead Philadelphia to a win over New York in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Embiid boldly stated “we’re going to win this series” after the 76ers dropped Game 2.

With one of the finest postseason efforts of his career, Embiid became the third player to ever score 50 points against the Knicks in the postseason and kept the hope of a Philadelphia series comeback very much alive.

The Knicks lead the series 2-1. Game 4 is Sunday in Philadelphia.

Embiid was 13 of 19 from the floor overall, made 19 of 21 free throws and hit five 3-pointers.

NUGGETS 112, LAKERS 105

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aaron Gordon had 29 points and 15 rebounds, Nikola Jokic added 24 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists, and Denver moved to the brink of the second round with a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 of their first-round series..

Jamal Murray scored 22 points as the defending NBA champion Nuggets won their 11th consecutive meeting with LeBron James and the Lakers in dominating style.

Michael Porter Jr. added 20 points for Denver, which took control in the third quarter and cruised through the final minutes to its fifth straight road win over Los Angeles, starting with its sweep of last season’s Western Conference finals.

Game 4 is Saturday night in Los Angeles. No NBA team has ever rallied from an 0-3 playoff deficit.
