Jenson and Ruben Powell are the youngest surviving pre-term twin boys born in Britain.

The parents of twins born weighing the same amount as half-a-bag of sugar have been reunited with the helicopter crew and medical staff who saved their lives.

Jennie Powell, 41, went into labour at 22 weeks while on holiday in Cornwall in August last year with her husband Rich, 42.

The couple, from Brighton, rushed to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro where doctors decided Mrs Powell needed to be transferred to a specialist neo-natal unit.

The nearest available beds were in Oxford and Mrs Powell was flown by HM Coastguard helicopter to the John Radcliffe Hospital where she gave birth the following day, on August 17.

Jenson was born weighing 535g and given 0% chance of surviving the first 48 hours, while Ruben weighed 590g and had between 20% to 30% chance of life.

They are the youngest surviving pre-term twin boys born in Britain after arriving at 22 weeks and six days. They were conceived by IVF.

“It really is a story of hope and miracles,” said their mother.

“They defied every set of odds that they were given.”

Two years earlier, Mr and Mrs Powell’s son, Linnie, died after being born at 23 weeks as a result of complications from a streptococcal B infection.

“The twins’ pregnancy was being closely watched as a result of what we had been through when we lost our first child,” Mrs Powell, a marketing manager, said.

“We have a holiday in Cornwall every year, and we were just at the end of two weeks away.

“I was nervous, because of the timings, but it also meant I was much more aware of the warning signs. I felt some pain, and just knew that something wasn’t right.

“We went straight to hospital, and it was suddenly all too familiar. The hospital ran tests and confirmed I was having contractions and my blood results indicated an infection.

“Everything that followed, in the days after that, we can only describe as miraculous – every decision made by the people who were looking after us ensured that our boys survived and are here today.”

The first critical decision by the maternity team was to treat Mrs Powell with steroids to provide the babies with support for their chronically underdeveloped lungs and to realise that they needed care that was not available in Cornwall.

“The hospital team didn’t give up calling, and when the John Radcliffe Hospital said they could take us that afternoon we found ourselves being airlifted by the HM Coastguard helicopter from Newquay,” she said.

Captain Jorg Brunner, co-pilot Ivan Hamilton, chief crewman Ian Copley and winchman-paramedic Niall Hanson took Mrs Powell and midwife Jane Parke on the one-hour-and-15-minute flight to Oxford.

“That was a lifesaving decision,” she said.

“After that day, Jane and the helicopter crew didn’t have any idea about what had happened to us – that the boys had survived. Being able to meet them again on the anniversary is so, so wonderful.”

Jenson and Ruben were delivered by emergency cesarean section the following day at 4.20pm and 4.21pm respectively.

They were taken immediately to neonatal intensive care and faced a catalogue of major events in the following weeks and months.

“We were being prepared for the likelihood of saying goodbye to another child,” Mrs Powell said.

At eight days post-delivery, Ruben had his first lifesaving operation after his intestines began failing when he developed necrotizing enterocolitis.

Meanwhile Jenson had his own issues, with weaknesses in his lungs.

The brothers are also the youngest to receive a vital eye injection to cure retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) – the same condition which caused Stevie Wonder’s sight loss.

“The standard of care we received was outstanding. The boys had it all – infections, more than 20 blood transfusions, sepsis, pneumonia, eye injections and laser surgery, hernia reversal, you name it. The team at John Radcliffe were on top of everything,” said Mr Powell, who works in the telecoms industry.

“Today, the boys are thriving. They will continue to have chronic lung disease until they are about three, which can make them more vulnerable to colds and infections, requiring oxygen support, but otherwise they are doing really well.”

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alex Kirilloff hit a two-out, game-ending single after Byron Buxton led off the ninth inning with a tying homer, and the major league-worst Chicago White Sox fell to 3-20 with a 6-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.

Chicago joined Cincinnati in 2022, Detroit in 2003, the St. Louis Browns in 1936 and the Cleveland Spiders in 1899 as teams to start 3-20. The 1988 Baltimore Orioles began 1-22.

“We’ve got to win games, man," White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “Bottom line.”

Trevor Larnach hit a 433-foot, two-run homer in the eighth to get the Twins within 5-4 and help set up the heroics by Buxton and Kirilloff against Steven Wilson (1-2). Buxton hit a line drive off the left-field foul pole, and Kirilloff pulled the ball into right field to score pinch-runner Austin Martin with the winning run.

The Twins have won three of four after a five-game skid.

“We've been putting in the work to snatch games like that,” Buxton said. “Those will be the wins that get us back on track and get us going.”

Kirilloff struck out four times before coming through with his second career walk-off hit.

Jay Jackson (1-1) allowed one run in two innings of relief for the Twins, striking out four.

Eloy Jiménez hit a three-run homer and starter Erick Fedde struck out a career-high 11 batters for the White Sox. Fedde allowed one run on three hits — all in the first inning — in his best performance since signing with Chicago during the offseason. The right-hander spent 2023 pitching in South Korea.

After his rocky first inning, Fedde retired the next 13 batters in order. That included two strikeouts each in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.

“If you want to be successful," Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said, "you've got to find ways to win games that are really not going your way and they’re stressing you in a tough fashion.”

Andrew Benintendi put Chicago ahead 5-2 with a two-run single in the eighth.

Jiménez's three-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole gave Chicago a 3-1 lead in the fourth. Twins starter Pablo López threw 38 pitches in the inning, his last. It was the second time in his past three starts he was pulled after four.

“Not a lot went right for a while in the game,” Baldelli said, “but you find a way.”

TRAINER'S ROOM
