Sri Lanka was 71-1 at tea on a rain-hit opening day of the second and final cricket test against New Zealand at P. Sara Oval on Thursday.

The start of play was delayed by more than three hours because of rain and a wet outfield, and more rain arrived during the tea break.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne was on 37 and in the middle with Kusal Mendis (30 not out).

The Black Caps called up allrounder Colin de Grandhomme and left out Mitchell Santner, one of the team's three spinners to play in Galle.

Sri Lanka replaced Akila Dananjaya, who has been reported for a suspected illegal bowling action, with another spin bowler, Dilruwan Perera.
