India: Pakistan firing kills 2 soldiers, civilian in Kashmir

2019-10-20 14:01 Last Updated At:14:20

The Indian military says Pakistani soldiers have targeted a border post and civilian areas along the highly militarized frontier in disputed Kashmir, leaving two army soldiers and a civilian dead.

Indian army spokesman Col. Rajesh Kalia says Indian soldiers "retaliated strongly" early Sunday in Tangdhar sector along the Line of Control dividing the Himalayan region between the two nuclear-armed rivals.

Kalia says three civilians were also injured in the Pakistani firing. He called it an "unprovoked" violation of a 2003 cease-fire accord between India and Pakistan.

Pakistan did not immediately comment.

India and Pakistan have a long history of bitter relations over Kashmir, which both claim. The renewed fighting comes amid the ongoing lockdown in Kashmir after India stripped the region of its semi-autonomy in early August.

A boat capsizes in Indian-controlled Kashmir, killing at least 4 people

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — A boat carrying a group of people capsized in a river in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Tuesday, drowning four of them, news agency Press Trust of India reported.

The boat capsized in Jhelum river near Srinagar, the region’s main city. Most of the passengers were children, and rescuers were searching for many others who were still missing.

Heavy rains fell over the region in the past few days, leading to higher water levels in the river.

Boating accidents are common in India, where many vessels are overcrowded and have inadequate safety equipment.

Last year, 22 people drowned when a double-decker boat carrying more than 30 passengers capsized near a beach in Kerala state in southern India.

In May 2018, 30 people died when their boat capsized on the swollen Godavari River in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
