Lightning looking for better start in Game 2 against Bruins

The Tampa Bay Lightning opened Game 1 against Boston on shaky ice, fumbling away pucks, turning it over in their own end, giving up a pair of early goals.

Tampa Bay seemed to get better as the game went along and Victor Hedman cashed in with a pair of third-period goals, but the push came too late. Boston held on for a testy 3-2 win.

No question what the Lightning need to do better in Game 2 Tuesday night in Toronto.

“We just kind of waited to see what the tone of the game was going to be like and we waited just a bit too long to be able to recover from it,” Lightning defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said. “Certainly wasn’t the case going into the second half of that game where I think we started to find our game and realize what it takes to be successful against Boston. I don’t envision our start being an issue going into Game 2."

Coming off a 4-1 series win over Carolina, Boston had the early jump against Tampa Bay in the opener, scoring two goals by early in the second period while building a 3-0 lead.

Goalie Jaroslav Halak was sharp in his fourth start since No. 1 goalie Tuukka Rask, a Vezina Trophy finalist, opted out for the remainder of the playoffs to be with his family. The 35-year-old Halak stopped 35 shots and the two goals he gave up deflected in off Boston defenseman Charlie McAvoy.

The reigning Eastern Conference champions withstood Tampa Bay's late push to win the opener, but they know the high-scoring Lightning will likely be buzzing to start Game 2 (7 p.m. EDT, NBC Sports Network).

“Game 1 is not going to dictate the whole series, typically," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said, "It's great if we go out there and put together three periods like our first period, but they had push back as the game went on. I thought they competed hard last night, maybe not from the first whistle they weren't as ready as we were. That happens to teams.”

VANCOUVER CANUCKS VS. VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS, Game 2 (9:45 p.m. EDT, NBCSN)

Vegas faced a potential distraction before Game 1 when Marc-Andre Fleury's agent tweeted an illustration of the goalie being impaled by a sword with coach Peter DeBoer's last name on it.

It did nothing to slow Vegas or starting goalie Robin Lehner.

Lehner stopped 26 shots and the Golden Knights swarmed the Canucks 5-0 to take the series lead into Game 2.

“That's just outside noise to us,” DeBoer said. “We're inside the bubble and we're in our own bubble inside the bubble, where we're not going to let any of that outside noise or stuff get in the way of what we're trying to do.”

The Canucks will be looking to bounce back from what coach Travis Green called their worst game of the playoffs. Vancouver struggled with Vegas' forecheck, didn't create many good scoring chances and goalie Jacob Markstrom was pulled after giving up five goals.

“Marky doesn't have to worry about anything,” Green said. “I had a brief conversation with him, I do that sometimes when I pull a goalie, sometimes when a player is having a tough game. I don't think Marky had that bad of a game, to be honest. A lot of the goals were unstoppable. I'm not worried about Marky. He's been a rock for us and will be a rock for us the rest of the playoffs."

Hailey Van Lith is headed to TCU for a final season after a one-year run with LSU

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Hailey Van Lith, who joined LSU this past season and reached the Elite Eight with the defending national champion before a loss to Caitlin Clark and Iowa, is transferring to TCU for her fifth and final season.

Van Lith spent her first three seasons with Louisville, reaching a Final Four and another Elite Eight before deciding to join four-time champion coach Kim Mulkey's team at LSU. TCU announced her decision Friday.

The guard averaged 14.5 points, four rebounds and 2.8 assists per game with the Cardinals and Tigers. She played mostly wing for Louisville before moving to point guard for Mulkey's team.

Van Lith is joining a TCU program that made the AP Top 25 this season before injuries forced the Horned Frogs to forfeit two games and hold open tryouts to bolster the roster.

TCU got off to a school-record 14-0 start, including a victory over BYU in the Big 12 Conference opener, before a six-game losing streak capped by the two forfeits. The Horned Frogs finished 21-12 and 6-12 in the Big 12 under second-year coach Mark Campbell.

Van Lith won't be playing with Haley Cavinder, who had announced she was headed to TCU from Miami. Her twin sister, Hanna Cavinder, had said she was considering no longer playing when both said they were leaving the Hurricanes.

After Hanna Cavinder decided to continue her career, both sisters said they were returning to Miami.

Van Lith will get to play with a pair of 20-point scorers in Sedona Prince and Madison Conner. Prince and Conner were among the players injured when TCU's 2023-24 season was derailed.

Born in Wenatchee, Washington, Van Lith is the only active Division I player with at least 1,900 points, 500 rebounds and 350 assists.

Van Lith, who will be a graduate student, also has been active with USA Basketball and is among the candidates for the 3x3 national team that will compete at the Paris Olympics this summer.
