Padres lose Tatis, beat Reds 7-5 on Kim's 2-run homer in 8th

Rookie Kim Ha-seong hit a tiebreaking, two-run home run with two outs in the eighth — three innings after he replaced injured star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. — and the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 Saturday.

Kim's homer off the Western Metal Supply Co. Building in the left field corner sent Petco Park into a frenzy on a wild day that included Tatis getting hurt again and Reds star Joey Votto and manager David Bell getting ejected in a wild scene in the first inning.

Tatis left after apparently hurting his left shoulder diving for Tyler Naquin's RBI single in the fifth. He was replaced by Kim, a rookie from South Korea.

Kim homered on a 1-2 pitch from Heath Hembree (1-2) to bring in Tommy Pham, aboard on a double. It was Kim's fourth. Nabil Crismatt (2-1) got the win.

San Diego will go for a four-game sweep on Sunday. The Padres entered the series after losing 13 of 17 games. The Reds came in on a six-game winning streak.

Tatis left after diving to his right for Naquin's single in the three-run fifth, when the Reds tied it at 5. Tatis extended his left arm as he landed and immediately reached for his shoulder, which he partially dislocated taking a violent swing against San Francisco on April 5. That injury landed him on the 10-day injured list.

Tatis was immediately checked by an athletic trainer as manager Jayce Tingler came out to make a pitching change. Tingler then checked on Tatis, who was in obvious discomfort as he left the game.

Tatis left a spring training game after hurting the shoulder while making a throw but was back two days later.

The electrifying Tatis signed the longest contract in baseball history in February, for 14 years and $340 million.

Votto and Bell were ejected in the first inning. Catcher Webster Rivas appealed after Votto offered at the high, outside pitch from Miguel Díaz, and third base umpire Chris Guccione confirmed Votto went around.

Votto was unhappy and began arguing, and Bell came out of the dugout and joined the argument. Bell and coaches Delino DeShields and Freddie Benavides had to keep Votto away from plate umpire Ryan Additon, who then apparently ejected the player and manager at the same time.

Votto had to be restrained as he continued to argue. Shortly after Votto went to the dugout, the fan was ejected. Bell came back out on the field to continue arguing before leaving the game.

The Padres took a 5-2 lead when Manny Machado hit a bases-loaded double into the left field corner with two outs in the fourth.

But the Reds tied it in the fifth, when they broke through against 28-year-old rookie Daniel Camarena after the local product had thrown two impressive innings in his big league debut.

Rookie Jonathan Indian and Jesse Winker opened the fifth with singles before Camarena got two outs. Tatis was hurt diving for Naquin's RBI single, which chased Camarena. James Norwood came on and walked Tyler Stephenson before Eugenio Suárez hit a two-run single to tie it.

The Reds took a 2-0 lead against Diaz on Winker's RBI double two batters into the game and Kyle Farmer's RBI double in the second.

Jake Cronenworth hit a tying, two-run homer in the third for the Padres, his eighth.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT

Camarena, who went to San Diego’s Cathedral Catholic High, retired six of the first eight batters he faced. He retired the side in the third, including baseball’s two hottest hitters, Winker and Nick Castellanos. After putting runners on the corners with no outs in the fourth, he again retired the side.

RHP Luis Castillo (2-9, 5.83) of the Reds and RHP Dinelson Lamet (1-2, 3.33) of the Padres are scheduled to start Sunday in the series finale.

Profar's throw, HR lead Padres to 6-0 win vs staggering Reds

2022-04-21 07:20 Last Updated At:07:30

Jurickson Profar threw out Joey Votto at home and then hit a two-run homer for the San Diego Padres, who won 6-0 Wednesday to hand the Cincinnati Reds their ninth straight loss and their longest skid in five years.

Profar's homer in the fourth inning gave rookie MacKenzie Gore (1-0) all the backing he needed for his first big league win, in his second start. The left-hander held the Reds to four hits in five innings, struck out seven and walked two to complete the three-game sweep.

Profar, the Padres' left fielder, threw out Votto on the fly on Colin Moran's single to end the fourth and keep the game scoreless. Profar homered to right off Vladimir Gutiérrez with two outs in the bottom of the inning to bring in Manny Machado. It was Profar's fourth.

Machado was hit by a pitch on the left shoulder by Gutiérrez (0-3) leading off the fourth. On Tuesday night, Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson was knocked out of the game on a hard slide by Luke Voit. Some Reds players felt it was a dirty play by Voit and Tommy Pham, who played for the Padres the last two seasons, said he wanted to fight the Padres' DH. The Reds asked for a review of the play but umpires ruled it was clean. Voit did not play Wednesday and Machado was the DH.

Gutierrez hit Padres catcher Jorge Alfaro with a pitch leading off the fifth. Alfaro stole second and scored on Trent Grisham's double.

Cincinnati, shut out for the first time this year, had not lost nine straight since June 9-18, 2017. The Reds went winless on a seven-game West Coast trip that started at Dodger Stadium.

Kim Ha-seong homered for the Padres in the seventh, his first. Alfaro had a sacrifice fly and rookie CJ Abrams an RBI double in the eighth.

Gutiérrez allowed three runs and two hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out two.

San Diego extended its major league record with 14 consecutive errorless games to open a season.
