MILWAUKEE (AP) — Dylan Cease pitched six strong innings, Ha-Seong Kim hit a three-run homer and the San Diego Padres beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Fernando Tatis Jr. had three hits and scored twice as the Padres handed the Brewers their first series loss of the season. San Diego will try to complete a three-game sweep Wednesday afternoon.

Sal Frelick had three of the Brewers' six hits, and William Contreras drove in two runs.

Cease (2-1) walked five batters, but he struck out seven. He surrendered one run and two hits while throwing 110 pitches, three off his career high. He improved his ERA to 1.99 in his first season with the Padres, who acquired the right-hander in a trade with the Chicago White Sox last month.

“I'm not happy with the inconsistencies with command, but it's hard to be unhappy with the results,” Cease said.

Cease has been particularly effective against right-handed hitters, yielding just one hit to right-handers through his first four starts.

“His stuff is so nasty,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “Sometimes you get the opportunity to sit back and just appreciate when somebody does something spectacular on a baseball field, and man, he threw some pitches that are like, ‘That’s just nasty stuff.' Exploding fastball. Dirty slider. He's got that.

"Clearly he's got the stuff. What I appreciate also is — and everybody's got a different competitive spirit — but Dylan clearly has a strong competitive spirit.”

The Padres took the lead for good by scoring four runs in the first against Wade Miley (0-1).

San Diego’s first three batters reached before Manny Machado hit a 107.7 mph liner that struck Miley on his left kneecap. The ball caromed off Miley and rolled toward first baseman Jake Bauers, who tagged out Machado while Xander Bogaerts scored from third.

Miley was examined by staff and then attempted some warmup pitches before staying in the game to face Kim, who blasted a 1-0 pitch off the left-field foul pole to give San Diego a 4-0 lead.

“I think that anytime you take a missile off your kneecap, that affects you,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said.

Miley’s leg appeared to bother him again as he threw out Kim on a bunt attempt in the third. Miley finished that inning after speaking with Brewers staff on the mound, but Milwaukee turned to its bullpen from there.

Miley permitted four hits and four runs — three earned — while striking out two and walking two. Miley had an X-ray that showed no fractures.

“It’s just a little sore right now, maybe a touch more tomorrow,” Miley said. “Just got to keep moving. The more I move, the better it feels.”

Milwaukee trailed 6-1 before staging a two-out rally in the seventh. Contreras hit an RBI single, and then Willy Adames walked to load the bases.

Yuki Matsui ended the threat by striking out pinch-hitter Gary Sánchez on three pitches.

TRAINERS' ROOM

Padres: 1B Jake Cronenworth was out of the starting lineup after a leg issue caused him to get removed in the ninth inning of the Padres' 7-3 victory Monday. Shildt said the Padres were still trying to determine the severity of the injury but noted that Cronenworth walked out of the stadium Monday “without any real discomfort.”

Brewers: OF Christian Yelich went on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Saturday, with a lower back strain. The Brewers recalled utilityman Owen Miller from Triple-A Nashville. Yelich hasn't played since the back problem caused him to leave in the second inning of an 11-1 triumph at Baltimore on Friday.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Ehire Adrianza and Mike Trout scored on a wild pitch and throwing error in the seventh inning as the Los Angeles Angels rallied from an early three-run deficit to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 Monday night and snap a four-game losing streak.

Adrianza had two hits and drove in a run, and Jo Adell homered as the Angels won on manager Ron Washington's 72nd birthday.

“It just happened to be my birthday, but we certainly needed it,” Washington said.

Alec Bohm extended his hitting streak to 13 games and drove in three runs for the Phillies, who had won four straight.

Five Angels’ pitchers held the Phillies to six hits, but also walked nine. Adam Cimber (2-0) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh when he got Brandon Marsh to ground out to end the inning.

“That was the hugest part of the game for both sides,” Washington said. “It saved the game right there and gave us a chance to get back in it.”

Carlos Estévez picked up his fifth save in six opportunities despite allowing one run in the ninth. Trea Turner scored on Bohm’s sacrifice fly, but Estévez struck out Marsh for the final out with the tying run at second.

“We had some opportunities no doubt. We’ve been coming through but just one of those nights,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said.

Adrianza led off the seventh with an infield single and advanced to second on Zach Neto's base hit. Adrianza advanced to third when Trout grounded into a fielder's choice. Trout got into scoring position with his sixth stolen base of the season.

With two outs and an 0-2 count on Taylor Ward, Seranthony Domínguez's 97.5 mile per hour fastball was low and skipped to the backstop as Adrianza easily scored. Catcher Garrett Stubbs' throw to Domínguez (1-2) at home plate was too high and allowed Trout to come in to put the Angels up by two runs.

“I think he (Stubbs) wanted it up and when he set up his glove he was too far away to get it,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said.

The Phillies got off to a quick start with three runs in the first. The first three batters reached to load the bases before Bohm had a two-run base hit to left-center and a sacrifice fly by Marsh.

Bohm, named the NL Player of the Week on Monday, is 26 for 51 during his hitting streak. He has 27 RBIs this month, which is tied with Ryan Howard for the modern-day franchise record for the most in April.

The Angels responded with runs in the first and second innings. Adell lined Cristopher Sánchez's slider into the seats in the left field corner for a solo shot in the first, and Adrianza added an RBI single in the second.

“I think we did a great job of just sticking to our approach,” said Adell, who has three homers in the past seven games. “When they made mistakes, we were able to capitalize and score some runs.”

Philadelphia extended its lead to 4-2 in the fifth when Kyle Schwarber scored after starter Griffin Canning was called for a balk when he threw to first base for a third time.

The Angels tied it with two runs in the sixth after the first two batters reached on base hits. After Logan O'Hoppe's grounder brought in one run, Cole Tucker's single up the middle drove in Brandon Drury to even it at 4-all.
