China is opposed to any attacks without solid evidence on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and called on international donors to resume payments to the aid agency, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin at a routine press conference on Thursday.
Wang's remarks came after an independent review of the UN relief agency concluded Israel has not presented evidence to support its claims that UNRWA staff were involved in the October 7 attacks on Israel, saying the agency has had in place for many years a significant number of robust mechanisms to ensure its neutrality.
"This round of conflict between Palestine and Israel still drags on, causing a grave humanitarian disaster. Humanitarian relief is the hope for the survival of the Gaza people. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East is the backbone of humanitarian relief in Gaza and plays an indispensable role. The review report released by the United Nations justifies the agency's compliance with neutrality and makes recommendations to improve the agency's work," Wang said.
"We support the United Nations in continuously improving the agency's work, oppose attacks and suppression on the agency, and call on countries that have yet to resume funding to the agency to resume payments at an early date. China will increase its support for the UNRWA and make its due contribution to alleviating the humanitarian disaster in Gaza," he said.
