Suriname holds a clear and firm position in support of the one-China principle and the reunification of China, said Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi.

Santokhi made the remarks in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) on April 14 during his state visit to China.

"Since we took the formal position as a nation, as an independent nation, Suriname, towards China 48 years ago, our position was quite clear and firm that we will support the one-China principle. That is also now, and that will be also our future position. I have the confidence that you will manage to have that reunification with all parts of China," he said.

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the establishment of a strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries, Santokhi paid a state visit to China from April 11 to 17 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. It was President Santokhi's first visit to China since he took office.

Vocational students show skills in rural-themed contest

China's second national vocational skill competition themed on rural vitalization kicked off on Wednesday in Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province, drawing 701 contestants from across the country to participate in this 11-event competition.

This year's competition, under the theme of "learning vocational skills to push for rural revitalization" witnesses an increase in the number of contestants. All the competitive events are relevant to real-life production.

"Most of the tasks contestants have to deal with are real-life problems. All the tractors here are equipped with an intelligent navigation-assisted driving system. By gradually incorporating new technologies into the examination content, outdated and eliminated technologies will be phased out," said Han Zhensheng, chief judge of the agricultural machine maintenance competition.

"I am so nervous. I sweat all over. This competition is truly a good opportunity for me to learn new skills and practice," said one contestant.

"I am really nervous and the tasks are truly challenging. It's really difficult for a female contestant like me do all this and use these tools. I have overcome these difficulties with the thought that I am here to learn. I am actually a teacher from Xizang Vocational Technical College. I hope that I can incorporate skills, methods I learned from the competition in my teaching," said the only female contestant in electrical engineering competition.

Apart from production-oriented competitive events, this year's competition also features some service-oriented events, such as competition over pastry making, childcare and elderly care. Contestants in these categories have to handle more difficult tasks as the market has higher expectations for workers in these areas.
