The Forum on Promoting University Technology Transfer opened on Saturday at the Beijing University of Technology.

As the first event of its kind held during the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum (ZGC Forum) annual conference, it has attracted representatives of hundreds of domestic and overseas universities and enterprises to explore new models to enhance the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

The three-day forum has gathered more than 500 sci-tech achievements brought by over 100 universities and research institutions. The event saw the release of a compilation of outstanding cases of sci-tech achievement transformations among universities.

In order to improve the transformation of scientific and technological achievements made by colleges and universities, The Beijing municipal government has introduced a series of measures in recent years and built a platform for university technology transfer through the Zhongguancun Forum.

"To ensure researchers' interests, the research team should receive 80 to 90 percent of the income generated by university technology transfer. Additionally, researchers who have made outstanding contributions should be given a green channel when applying for promotion. The Zhongguancun Forum serves as a shining example of a national-level science and technology event. We aim to create an environment wherein our expert team can commercialize our patented technology while meeting the needs of enterprises and providing social science and technology services for the society," said Jiang Zeting, Party Secretary of the Beijing University of Technology.

The ZGC Forum kicked off on Thursday in Beijing. It focuses on cutting-edge fields from artificial intelligence to life sciences and new materials over the course of the five-day session, scheduled to close on Monday.

Houthi-held vessel crew express hope for early release amid IRCR delegation visit

2024-05-13 19:05 Last Updated At:19:37

Crew of the Galaxy Leader, an Israeli-linked cargo ship hijacked by the Houthi group, expressed their hope for an early return to their families, when a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited the vessel on Sunday near the port city of Hodeidah in western Yemen.

It was the first time that the organization did so, after the cargo vessel was held by the Houthi group last November in response to the conflict in Gaza.

The delegation said that it met all the 25 detainees to check on their condition and listen to their concerns.

The crew of the Galaxy Leader vessel are made up of different nationalities, including Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Mexican and Filipino.

"It's possible to stop [the fighting], and possible also for a ceasefire, so that [it means] it may be possible that we [can be] released, because we are staying here [for] too much long time already. We are already six months staying here, and [we are hoping] as much as possible for [the chance of] releasing us, to reunite with our family as soon as possible. Also, we would like to thank the Yemeni people for a warm welcome, thank you for the hospitality. They're good for us for sure, but we are only concerned about our family, that's why [we want to know] if it's possible [that] we can be released as soon as possible," said Alvin Casaurus, a crew member.

The Houthi group, also known as Ansar Allah, claimed that the crew have regular communication with their families.

The Houthi group also said that their fate is linked to the Palestinian cause, warning they will not be released until Israel's war on Gaza stops and permanent ceasefire is reached with Hamas.

"The fate of the crew is clear, as it is linked to our brothers in Hamas and Al-Qassam. We urge prisoners to negotiate with their countries, since they are working on an Israeli ship. Their fate is tied to this ship. If communication is made with the brothers in Al-Qassam and they agree to release them, we have no problem doing this," said Nasr al-din Amer, a leader in Ansar Allah.

The Houthis have prevented ships associated with Israel from sailing through the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and Indian Ocean, since the escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict. They have since targeted over 100 ships as part of their operations.

Last November, the Houthis seized the Galaxy Leader and its crew, the first vessel since October 7th.
