Cultural exchanges and dialogue between civilizations are important to promote mutual understanding and avoid conflicts between countries, according to Ezzatollah Zarghami, the Iranian Minister of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism.

He made his comments in an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) in Beijing, as the Glory of Ancient Persia exhibition kicked off in Shanghai.

The exhibition is the largest ever exhibit of Iranian archaeological treasures in China and features over 200 cultural relics from Iranian museums.

Zarghami highlighted the significance of the exhibition as a way of cultural exchange, saying museums play an important role in enriching lives and enhancing understanding between nations.

"Museums are dynamic, and the exhibits in any museum have value that can enrich people's lives, enhance their understanding, and allow them to benefit from human experiences. Chinese people have excelled in this field. Recognizing this, we believe that we can strengthen our connection and bring the people of our two countries closer together in this area. Therefore, this exhibition, which is the largest ever held in China and approved by the Iranian government, is showcasing the treasures from ancient Iran's Iron Age 3000 years ago, to the glorious Safavid dynasty. The government has considered exhibiting these artifacts abroad and chose China as the venue for a six-month exhibition," he said.

"Earlier, I proposed to the government to extend the exhibition's duration. The government agreed to extend the exhibition in Shanghai for another six months. This demonstrates the Islamic Republic's intention to enhance cooperation with China in the field of museums. Our Chinese friends have also expressed their desire to strengthen the relationship between our two peoples through this cultural exchange. The government can be a supporter to the public, and its support can further encourage the idea of strengthening people-to-people exchanges. Through this exhibition, we aim to promote mutual understanding between the civilizations and cultures of our two countries," Zarghami said.

Zarghami expressed his support for the UN General Assembly's recent passage of a resolution proposed by China to establish the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.

He said it is important that different civilizations and cultures co-exist peacefully while noting his dissatisfaction with certain Western individuals' rejection of other civilizations.

"When the respected Chinese President proposed the Global Civilization Initiative at a broader global level, the United Nations passed relevant resolutions in response. Countries around the world are willing to develop relations with other nations based on civilized dialogue. Dialogue between civilizations should first acknowledge the existence of different civilizations, as they belong to human society," he said.

"However, some individuals in the West do not recognize the equality of civilizations and reject other civilizations. They are more interested in their own interests and seek to impose a particular civilization and lifestyle on other countries in an internationalized manner, homogenizing all nations. China's proposed initiative on civilization believes that firstly, we must respect the equality of different civilizations and acknowledge their existence. As the Supreme Leader of Iran proposed many years ago, we must avoid conflicts, confrontations, hostilities, or invasions between different civilizations and cultures. Instead, we should promote interaction and communication between different civilizations and cultures," said Zarghami.
