The ongoing EURO 2024 from June 14 to July 14 is boosting tourism from China to European countries, according to travel services and visa statistics.

Football fans from across China have booked tickets for the Euros and planned their travel itineraries. Mr. Zhang, a football fan from Wuhan City in central China's Hubei Province, said he and many of his friends plan to go to Europe. His child will be on summer vacation soon, so he booked a 13-day tour to Germany and France for his family and bought tickets for the semi-finals.

"We hope to experience one of the top football matches in person," he said.

Another young football fanatic is also planning a trip to Europe because the schedule overlaps with her summer vacation as well.

"My friends and I are hoping to see the EURO this summer vacation and visit for about ten days, just to feel the passion in the stadium," she said.

Travel agencies said that itineraries mainly featuring Germany along with two or three surrounding countries have become popular among tourists during the month-long series of football matches.

"During the Euros competition, bookings of individual tours to Switzerland, France and Germany are soaring. Among group tours, bookings of 12-day tours to Germany, France and Italy are high. With the Olympic Games in France and the Euros in Germany, travel to Europe is booming," said Zhu Tao, a regional director of a travel agency.

According to official statistics from visa application service provider VFS, from January to April this year, the number of German visa applications in China increased by 16 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

Travel service sites show that in one week, searches related to Europe were up about 40 percent from the previous week, and searches related to Germany were up about 30 percent. Bookings for outbound travel to Europe are up about 80 percent over last year, and bookings to Germany are up about 90 percent.

Heavy rainfall in Hubei leaves 754 reservoirs exceeding flood storage capacities

2024-07-14 11:30 Last Updated At:12:07

The torrential rain that started to fall on Friday in central China's Hubei Province has left 754 reservoirs in the region exceeding flood storage capacities.

Due to increased discharge from the Three Gorges Reservoir and recent heavy rainfall, water levels in the Hubei section of the Yangtze River and in smaller rivers within the province are expected to rise in the coming days.

Multiple areas in Hubei, including Wuhan, Yichang, Jingmen, Xiaogan, and 11 other cities and prefectures, have also experienced heavy rainfall since Friday.

The heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in a low-lying residential area in Xiaogan City on Saturday, trapping several residents in their homes. Rescue personnel then used rescue boats to evacuate the flood-stranded residents to safety.

In Wuhan City, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds caused multiple power line failures across the city. After nearly two hours of emergency repairs, power supply has been fully restored.

The heavy rainfall also caused the water level of Maojiahe Reservoir in Xingshan County, Yichang City, to rise rapidly. Considering the possibility of continued heavy rainfall, the reservoir started to discharge floodwater at 13:00 Saturday.

"We've quickly organized personnel to initiate emergency plans, notify every household, set up roadblocks on major transportation routes, and prohibit people and vehicles from entering the areas of flood discharge channels," said Cai Bishou, head of Pingshui Village, Gufu Town, Yichang City's Xingshan County.
