Shanghai has ramped up efforts to boost consumer spending by holding a variety of events, including outdoor markets of different themes and a night festival.

Recently, an outdoor flower market in downtown Shanghai invited over 40 different brands to showcase trendy floral products, becoming a hit among residents.

"I came here after I saw it online. My daughter and I, we really like flowers," said a visitor.

"I find many products quite niche here. They are rarer than those we usually see," said another visitor.

Many brands said they use the event to draw in more customers to their stores or pay for their services afterwards.

"We mainly sell foliage plants, and most of our target consumers are white collar workers. To us, this activity is a chance to get more people come to our store," said Yi Wei, director of Echo Forest.

"Our target consumers are mainly younger people who like niche products. And in this downtown area, we can get access to more younger people," said Liao Wantian, director of Guaniu Plants. "We mainly sell plant specimens. So it's quite suitable for us to be here. And people in this downtown area, they have great purchasing power. We want to make more promotions, and get more people come to our store," said Ren Xian, founder of Aurora Borealis.

Another effort to encourage consumption is holding a night festival, which is designed to expand residents' entertainment options with stores, restaurants, and even nighttime exercises.

"We have various sports activities on the terraces of our shopping malls, such as nighttime yoga and aerobics dancing. We hope people can feel the vitality in summer," said Lu Yiqin, manager of the operation and management department at Bailian Group.

The municipal government said the festival will run until September, featuring about 100 stores and restaurants staying open especially late, and events including an e-sports festival as well as nighttime exercises to expand residents' entertainment options.
