Iran's Caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met in Tehran on Sunday and discussed the regional situation and bilateral relations.

This was the first official visit by a senior Jordanian official to Iran in more than two decades.

In their meeting, Bagheri noted that Israel's assassination of Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh flagrantly violated the international law and the Charter of the United Nations, violated Iran's sovereignty and national security, and posed serious threat to regional and global peace and security. It is necessary for Iran to give a firm and regretful answer to the Israeli regime.

The Jordanian foreign minister said the purpose of his trip is to exchange views on the escalated regional tension. His country had condemned Israel's act of aggression, especially the assassination of Haniyeh.

Safadi stated that the Palestinian question takes a priority position in Jordan's foreign policy, and Jordan will defend the rights of the Palestinian people with all efforts.

As for the bilateral ties between Iran and Jordan, Bagheri noted that Iran attaches great importance to developing relations with its neighbors and will adhere to the principle of good-neighborliness and friendship to resolve regional conflicts.

Safadi said that the two countries share a long history of relations. Jordan is determined to engage in frank and transparent dialogs with Iran to remove obstacles and improve relations.

Jordan is the second Arab country to establish diplomatic relations with Israel. Analysts believe that there are some disputes between Jordan and Iran in history, and Jordan's relationship with Israel and the U.S. has added complexity to its ties with Iran.

However, due to historic and geopolitical reasons, Jordan cannot stay out of the Palestine-Israel conflict.

As tension escalates in the region, Jordan is trying to play a mediating role between Israel, the United States, Iran and other parties to avoid a larger conflict.

Haniyeh, who had been invited to attend Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, was killed along with his bodyguard early Wednesday when their residence in Tehran was hit, according to Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, which said Israel had carried out the "terrorist attack" and vowed "a harsh and painful response."
