Only through an end of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine can the peaceful coexistence of Palestine and Israel be truly realized, a Chinese envoy said on Thursday.
Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks at a UN Security Council meeting, which discussed implementation of Security Council Resolution 2334. The resolution demands Israel "immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem."

"Independent statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people as a nation. The prolonged illegal occupation by Israel has hindered the realization of self-determination of the Palestinian people and given Israel an exclusive veto over the establishment of an independent State of Palestine," said Geng.
He noted that Israel has been expanding settlements in the West Bank and occupying Palestinian territory, which has continuously undermined the foundation of the two-state solution.
It is particularly regrettable that due to certain countries' negative attitude, the UN Security Council is not able to take strong actions to resolve the Palestinian question, or to stop the conflict in Gaza which has lasted nearly a year, said Geng.
