China urges the United States to fulfill its promise not to support Taiwan separatist activities, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Thursday.

Lin warned the U.S. about the grave consequences of colluding with separatists in the Taiwan Island, when asked to comment on the recent phone call between Taiwan's leader Lai Ching-te and U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson.

"In recent weeks, we have made clear our serious opposition more than once to the U.S.'s arranging for Lai Ching-te's 'stopovers' and having official interactions with the Taiwan region. I hereby stress once again that the Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests and the first red line that cannot be crossed in China-U.S. relations," Lin said.

"We urge the U.S. to fully understand the grave damage that separatist activities in Taiwan do to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, fully abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, act on the U.S. leaders' commitments, including not supporting Taiwan secession, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, and stop sending any wrong signal to Taiwan separatist forces. China will take resolute and strong measures to defend our nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity," said the spokesman.

US tariffs on China not conducive to either side or world: spokesman

2025-01-23 17:28 Last Updated At:19:37

If the United States imposes tariffs on Chinese goods, it will not be conducive to either side or the whole world, a spokesman of China's Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.

He Yadong, the spokesman, said at a press conference in Beijing in response to reports that U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his administration was discussing imposing a 10 percent tariff on goods imported from China starting on Feb. 1.

"China's stance on tariffs is consistent. These tariff measures do not serve the interests of either China or the U.S., nor for the whole world. China is willing to work with the United States to promote the steady, sound and sustainable development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation," said He.
