The annual Central Economic Work Conference was held in Beijing from Wednesday to Thursday when priorities for the economic work in 2025 were put forth.
Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered an important speech at the conference.
In his speech, Xi reviewed the country's economic work in 2024, analyzed the current economic situation and arranged the economic work for the next year.
The conference held that China's overall economic operation has been steady, sound and upward, with solid progress made in high-quality development in 2024, a critical year for fulfilling the goals and tasks set out in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025).
The main goals and tasks for economic and social development were about to be accomplished this year, with solid steps taken in Chinese modernization, according to the conference.
As the external environment changes exert a more adverse impact, the Chinese economy still faces many difficulties and challenges, the conference pointed out, adding that in the meantime, the supporting factors and fundamental trend of long-term positive growth in China's economy remain unchanged.
It is important to face the difficulties head on, enhance confidence, and strive to turn various positive factors into tangible development outcomes, the conference said.
The conference pointed out the necessity to coordinate the relationship between an efficient market and a well-functioning government, between aggregate supply and demand, between cultivating new growth drivers and upgrading the old ones, between optimizing incremental resources and making good use of the existing ones, and between improving quality and expanding gross volume.
Regarding the economic work next year, the conference called for adhering to the general principle of pursuing progress while ensuring stability, further deepening reform comprehensively, and pursuing high-standard opening-up.
It's important to implement more proactive and effective macro policies, expand domestic demand, and promote the integrated development between sci-tech innovation and industrial innovation, according to the conference.
The country should step up efforts to stabilize the property market and the stock market, and prevent and defuse risks in key areas and external shocks, the conference noted.
It urged efforts to ensure stable expectations, stimulate vitality, and promote the sustained recovery and growth of the economy, while continuously enhancing people's living standards and maintaining social harmony and stability.
The conference stressed the importance to fulfill the goals and tasks set out in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) with high quality, to lay a solid foundation for a good start to the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030).
Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang and Li Xi, members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, attended the conference.
Premier Li Qiang made a concluding speech, putting forward requirements for implementing the spirit of Xi's important speech and doing a good job in the economic work next year.
