Emergency relief is pacing up in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, with the installation of mobile homes prioritized for displaced earthquake-affected residents.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County at 09:05 on January 8, causing widespread damage. At least 126 people have been confirmed dead, and 188 others are reported injured.

The installation of mobile homes in Lhaze County has become a top priority. From Saturday morning to Sunday, 100 mobile houses were installed, providing immediate shelter for residents.

The relocation site of Xialasu Village has offered residents relief supplies of blankets, food, and clothing at their new homes. Priority has been given to moving the elderly and those in poor health from emergency tents to these newly built cold-resistant houses.

Workers are continuing to finish supporting infrastructure at the relocation site, including the power supply. A team of 16 electrical workers has completed internal wiring, and power is expected to be fully restored by Sunday night.

Local police officers are setting up a temporary security post at the relocation site to enhance safety.

In Gulong Village, Changshuo Town, 30 militia members from the Dingri County People's Armed Forces Department have been clearing debris from the earthquake's destruction.

Using heavy machinery, the militia has managed to clear much of the rubble, despite strong winds and low temperatures.

"At this stage, our primary task is assisting the local population with infrastructure repair, ensuring transportation and road security, maintaining public order, and guaranteeing safety. We're also engaged in emergency rescue and unloading relief supplies. Today, our Mount Qomolangma Emergency Militia Company has dispatched 100 people: 40 are securing transport routes and maintaining order, 30 are unloading relief goods, and 30 are in Gulong Town helping local residents retrieve their things," said Wu Haiyang, an officer of the Dingri County People's Armed Forces Department.

Many of the militia members are local Tibetan residents, making it easier for them to communicate and adapt to the challenging environment.

Wu noted that although some militia members' families were affected by the earthquake, they immediately answered the call to assist in the disaster relief efforts. Their dedicated and fearless efforts have been widely praised by the local community.

The 139th China Import and Export Fair, commonly known as the Canton Fair, is seeing steady, high-quality growth in buyer attendance with an increasingly diversified global market reach, an official from the China Foreign Trade Center (CFTC) said at a press briefing on Friday.

According to the CFTC, pre-registrations for the upcoming fair have surpassed 210,000, marking a 20 percent year-on-year increase. The new buyers mainly come from countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, with rapid increases also seen from regions including Latin America and Africa.

Zhu Yong, director of the China Foreign Trade Center, outlined the key characteristics of the pre-registered buyers and their procurement priorities.

"For the first time, professional buyers account for over 70 percent of total pre-registrations. These buyers have demonstrated robust demand for China's new, green and smart products, with electrical and electronic products, consumer electronics, and power and electrical equipment ranking as the top three categories for pre-registered purchasing intentions," she said.

Established in 1957, the Canton Fair is held every spring and autumn in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province. As the longest-running comprehensive international trade event in China, it is widely regarded as a barometer of China's foreign trade. It has been successfully held for 138 sessions and has helped establish trade relations with more than 229 countries and regions around the world.

The upcoming 139th edition is scheduled to take place from April 15 to May 5, 2026.
