The Canadian government released a list of more than 1,000 U.S. goods subject to 25-percent import tariffs on Sunday, in response to the recent U.S. tariff hikes.
The first phase of the countermeasures, to take effect on Tuesday, will impose the tariffs on 30 billion Canadian dollars' (about 20.6 billion U.S. dollars) worth of U.S. goods, including beverages, cosmetics and paper products.
The Canadian Minister of Finance Dominic LeBlanc described the move as Canada's initial response to U.S. trade actions.
A second phase will follow, targeting an additional 125 billion Canadian dollars' (nearly 86 billion U.S. dollars) worth of U.S. imports, covering fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and steel and aluminum products.
The full list will be published in coming days and these measures will take effect in 21 days.
The Canadian government warned that if the U.S. continues imposing unjustified tariffs, it will consider further countermeasures, including non-tariff actions.
It emphasized that Canada's response will be reciprocal and firm.
To shield domestic businesses from the impact, the Canadian government has also introduced tariff relief measures for certain sectors affected by U.S. trade policies.
