China and the European Union (EU) should continue to be strategic partners, grounded in mutual respect, trust, and long-term stability, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during his meeting with Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on the sidelines of the ongoing Munich Security Conference in Germany.
Wang stated that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU. The two sides should seize this opportunity to reflect on their successful development so far, remain committed to their partnership, prioritize dialog and cooperation, and continue to be long-term and stable strategic partners based on mutual respect, trust, and win-win results.
China is willing to hold a series of celebrations with the EU, prepare for the new China-EU Summit, draw up a new blueprint and inject fresh impetus into China-EU relations for the next 50 years, he said.
There is no fundamental conflict of interests or geopolitical contradiction between China and the EU. Both sides adhere to multilateralism, uphold the core position of the United Nations, address international hot issues through dialog and consultation, and oppose unilateral bullying. China is willing to strengthen strategic communication with the EU, enhance mutual understanding, and jointly provide more stability for the world, Wang said.
For her part, Kallas said the EU attaches great importance to China and is willing to jointly prepare for the EU-China Summit, solemnly celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two sides, and make plans for the future development of bilateral relations. The EU appreciates China's leadership in tackling climate change and is willing to work with China to safeguard multilateralism and uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis. Wang explained China's position in detail, emphasizing that China supports all efforts conducive to peace and encourages EU to play an important role in the peace talks process.
