China has launched a nationwide initiative to renew aging elevators in residential communities, with upgrade work for approximately 36,000 such outdated elevators having already commenced by February, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
The project started in July 2024 and is part of a broader large-scale equipment upgrade program which aims to benefit residents up and down the country.
Part of the funding has been provided through special treasury bonds with a total of 6.2 billion yuan (about 860 million U.S. dollars) being allocated to support the renewals of some 41,000 elevators across the country, improving living conditions and safety for around 1.7 million households.
At a conference held on Friday, officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the State Administration for Market Regulation emphasized their commitment to promoting the elevator renewal project in 2025, as well as better managing the special treasury bonds to support the project.
For the next step, authorities at all levels have been tasked with conducting thorough investigations into the total number and conditions of old elevators in residential communities across the country, and explore multiple funding channels, including special funds for housing renovations, as well as self-raised funds of residents.
