The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) on Sunday released a report on the overall trend of meteorological progress worldwide in 2024.

March 23 marks the 65th World Meteorological Day, with the theme of "Closing the Early Warning Gap Together."

Planet Earth faces unprecedented climate challenges. 2024 was the hottest year on record. Global warming has triggered frequent and intensified extreme weather events, which emphasizes the importance of early warning systems in disaster prevention and mitigation.

CMA has made great efforts to step up meteorological disaster monitoring, forecasting, and warning as well as prevention and response capabilities.

The report demonstrates the overall trend of meteorological progress worldwide and the major meteorological achievements in key areas in 2024.

In response to the global meteorological development trend, the report analyzes that cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence are rapidly advancing and reshaping the future prospects of the meteorological industry.

At the same time, the report recognizes that significant progress has been made in the modernization of China's meteorological scientific and technological capabilities as well as social services. China's early warning achievements and experiences have been widely promoted to multiple countries.

The "Fengqing," "Fenglei" and "Fengshun" large models released by CMA have been successfully implemented in the meteorological business field.

The country's Fengyun meteorological satellite data services now cover 130 countries and regions, becoming a key tool supporting the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", according to the report.

China's experience, technology, and standards have contributed strength to global climate governance and addressing climate change.

"As of now, more than 100 countries worldwide have established early warning systems for multiple disasters. Our meteorological department has been actively implementing Chinese practices. China's experience has provided solutions for enhancing global disaster prevention and mitigation, and strengthening the capacity and resilience against climate change. The people-centered approach has gained recognition and appreciation from the World Meteorological Organization," said Li Lijun, director of the Meteorological Development and Planning Institute of CMA.

The Chinese Embassy in the United States hosted a celebration on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. to mark the 2026 United Nations Chinese Language Day, which fell on Monday.

The event attracted about 500 attendees, including teenagers interested in Chinese culture and friends from all walks of life.

Speaking at the event, Minister Qiu Wenxing of the Chinese Embassy in the United States said that Chinese is one of the fastest-growing foreign languages among college students in the U.S., with nearly 400 primary and secondary schools in 31 states offering Chinese courses and more and more American friends joining the ranks of Chinese learners.

He noted that the essence of the Chinese language lies in harmonious coexistence. At present, China-U.S. relations are facing challenges, which calls for even greater need to draw wisdom from the way of harmony and cooperation.

At the event, a touring troupe composed of teachers and students from four universities in central China's Henan Province presented performances such as folk music, martial arts, and Henan opera.

Chinese Language Day, established by the United Nations in 2010, is celebrated annually on Guyu, or Grain Rain, the sixth of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms, to highlight the global significance of the language.
