Powerful 7.9-magnitude quake kills at least 10 in Myanmar

A powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar at around 12:50 local time on Friday, killing at least 10 people and causing significant damage to a number of buildings and roads in the Southeast Asian country.

The quake hit at a depth of 30 kilometers, with the epicenter monitored at 21.85 degrees north latitude and 95.95 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

Multiple structures in Myanmar's Mandalay Region collapsed, while several roads linking to the largest city of Yangon were also damaged or blocked, causing major transport disruption.

Local reports stated that at least 10 people were killed when a mosque collapsed in Mandalay, while the walled fort of the Mandalay Palace also sustained damage.

Myanmar's National Disaster Management Committee has declared a state of emergency across six regions in the country following the disaster.

A 30-story-tall building which was under construction in the Thai capital collapsed, resulting in at least one death and leaving 43 others missing, with fears the death toll could rise.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced a state of emergency in Bangkok following the quake.

Strong tremors were also felt in neighboring China, Laos, and Thailand, as well as in Vietnam.

The Chinese military has continued to conduct combat readiness patrols in the territorial waters of and airspace over the Huangyan Dao as well as the surrounding areas in the South China Sea since the beginning of December, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command said Wednesday.

The PLA Southern Theater Command said it has deployed naval and air forces troops to reinforce patrols and vigilance, further strengthening control and management over the relevant areas.

The move has effectively addressed various infringement and provocations, with an aim to safeguard China's sovereignty and security while maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea, according to the PLA Southern Theater Command.
