US fentanyl-related tariff on China undermines anti-drug cooperation: spokesman

The unjustifiable U.S. imposition of fentanyl-related tariff on China gravely undermines anti-drug dialogue and cooperation between the two sides, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Friday.

Guo Jiakun, the spokesman, made the statement at a press conference in Beijing after the United States groundlessly criticized China for a lack of sincerity in addressing the fentanyl crisis, and threatened to take more punitive measures to force China to take substantive actions.

"The Fentanyl issue is rooted in the U.S. itself, not China. The United States is to blame. But it ignores China's goodwill and groundlessly imposed a fentanyl-related tariff on China. This is a typical act of bullying, which seriously undermines dialogue and cooperation between the two sides in the field of drug control. A Chinese mainland spokesperson has accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities of abusing judicial power to silence dissent after Taiwan regional internet influencer Chen Chih-han was indicted.

The New Taipei district prosecutors alleged on January 8 that Chen, who runs a YouTube channel, knowingly used "inflammatory language" during a livestream despite being aware of the channel's large and diverse audience and the likelihood that his remarks would spread widely, according to media reports.

She said the case exposed political manipulation of the judicial system.

"The DPP authorities is abusing judicial means to intimidate and suppress the Taiwan people who support cross-Strait exchanges, attempting to create 'green terror' and restrict the freedom of the Taiwan public.
