The person in charge of a detention center in north Yemen, which was destroyed by U.S. air raids early on Monday, has strongly condemned the "heinous crimes" against civilians, saying that the center is a civilian facility under the supervision of the United Nations.

The U.S. military launched three missiles at the illegal migrant detention center in the northern province of Saada, killing at least 68 African migrants and injuring 47 others, reported the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV.

Hamid Qaami, who is responsible for the detention center, recalled what had happened at that moment. He said that the first two missiles hit the facility and exploded, completely destroying the entire building, while the third one did not explode after hitting the center, with the body of the projectile left at the site before being moved to a safe place by relevant personnel.

"Early in the morning of April 28, the U.S. military surprisingly carried out intensive air strikes on this detention center, committing heinous crimes against the African people detained here. The operation here is under the supervision of the United Nations. They know that this is a civilian facility and has nothing to do with military facilities," he told the China Central Television.

Meanwhile, the Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, said all the victims are illegal African migrants held in the detention center.

"The migrants in this center are under the supervision of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Committee of the Red Cross, and targeting this center constitutes a full-fledged war crime," the Houthi group said in a statement on the television channel.

According to the IOM, Yemen remains a transit country for thousands of migrants traveling between the Horn of Africa and Saudi Arabia despite years of civil war in the country.

Tensions between the Houthi group and the United States have sharply risen since Washington resumed airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen on March 15. The strikes were intended to deter the Houthis from targeting Israel and U.S. ships in the Red and Arabian Seas.

Demonstrators rallied across U.S. cities over the weekend to denounce the military action in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who were flown out of the country.

The Venezuelan government said the military strikes targeted civilian and military sites in at least four states, including Caracas, as well as the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, adding that the U.S. action blatantly violated the UN Charter.

The U.S. military intervention has since drawn widespread criticism, sparking protests at home.

Protesters gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on Sunday, where Maduro is being held, calling the U.S. government actions outrageous and a violation of international law.

Others gathered in the Times Square on Saturday following the capture of the Venezuelan president and his wife, saying the actions are not only illegal but also showed no respect.

"I mean, you don't just step in and take over another country. We have absolutely no right to do that. We have so much trouble in our country right here," said a protester named Sartre.

"It just defies not only human respectability in life but common sense," said another protester.

Additionally, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the White House, holding banners with slogans reading "Hands off Venezuela" and "Stop bombing Venezuela now."
