Xi urges China, France to be reliable forces for maintaining international order

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged China and France to be reliable forces for maintaining international order, open forces for promoting global growth and progressive forces for guiding multilateral cooperation.

Speaking to French President Emmanuel Macron over phone, Xi called on China and France to jointly safeguard the UN authority and status, defend international trade rules and world economic order, and practice true multilateralism.

Xi noted that during his visit to France in May last year, the two sides agreed to carry forward the spirit of China-France diplomatic ties -- characterized by independence, mutual understanding, strategic vision and win-win cooperation -- and to enrich it with new meaning in the context of our times. Since then, China-France cooperation has made much new progress, he said.

The two sides should enhance strategic communication and build greater consensus, Xi said, calling for efforts to seize opportunities to deepen cooperation in traditional areas such as investment, aerospace and nuclear energy, while expanding cooperation in emerging sectors including digital economy, green development, biomedicine and the silver economy.

He also stressed the need to enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges and promote friendship between the two peoples.

Xi emphasized that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations. As permanent members of the UN Security Council and independent major countries, Xi said, both China and France were founders and builders of the post-war international order, while urging the two countries to strengthen solidarity and cooperation.

The more complex the international situation becomes, he added, the more China and France need to make the right strategic choice.

The Chinese president said that China has always viewed Europe as an independent pole in a multipolar world, and supported the European Union (EU) in enhancing its strategic autonomy and playing a more important role in international affairs.

China is ready to work with the EU to tackle global challenges and deliver more outcomes that benefit both sides and the world at large, he added.

Macron said France-China ties and EU-China ties are of global significance.

No matter how the international situation changes, France's position of attaching great importance to its relations with China and abiding by the one-China principle will remain unchanged, he said.

France is willing to strengthen practical cooperation with China in economy and trade, investment and various other fields, maintain the sound momentum of growth in bilateral relations, and push for greater development of France-China relations, said Macron.

Under the rapidly changing international situation, he said France is willing to enhance communication and coordination with China on major issues, fulfill the responsibility as permanent members of the UN Security Council, prevent the escalation and spillover of hotspot issues, and jointly maintain world and regional peace and stability.

The EU and China should further strengthen communication and dialog and safeguard their shared interests, said Macron.

The two presidents also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis, the Palestine-Israel conflict, the Iranian nuclear issue, and other international and regional issues of common concern.

Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Saturday China is willing to work with Lesotho to strengthen exchanges on governance experience, enhance coordination in multilateral affairs, and advance the China-Lesotho strategic partnership.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with Lesotho Prime Minister Sam Matekane in the capital of Lesotho.

During the meeting, Wang congratulated Lesotho on the 60th anniversary of its independence this year, and spoke highly of Lesotho government's efforts to prioritize economic development and steer the African country onto a path of sustainable growth. Since the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in 2024, the two sides have advanced cooperation under the 10 partnership action plans unveiled at the summit, successfully implementing a number of key projects to effectively promote Lesotho's development and revitalization, Wang said.

China stands ready to work with Lesotho to strengthen exchanges on governance experience, enhance coordination in multilateral affairs, and push for greater development of the China-Lesotho strategic partnership, he added.

Calling on the two sides to firmly support each other, Wang said that China will accelerate the implementation of its zero-tariff policy for African countries, including Lesotho, expand bilateral trade, investment and industrial cooperation, facilitate broader access of Lesotho's specialty products to the Chinese market, and continue to support Lesotho's national development.

China will continue to stand firmly with African countries, uphold justice for the Global South, including Lesotho, oppose unilateralism and acts of bullying, and work together to build a community with a shared future for humanity, Wang said.

On his part, Matekane said during the meeting that Lesotho cherishes its friendship with China and the strategic partnership between the two countries, and expressed gratitude for China's valuable support for the development of African countries, including Lesotho.

Lesotho firmly adheres to the one-China principle and resolutely supports China in safeguarding its core interests, he said, noting that his country stands ready to strengthen strategic mutual trust with China, expand people-to-people exchanges, jointly implement the outcomes of the FOCAC Beijing Summit, and deepen cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, manufacturing and energy.

Matekane stressed that China's zero-tariff policy for African products will inject new impetus into Lesotho's development. He also expressed Lesotho's willingness to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with China on multilateral platforms such as BRICS to jointly address global challenges.

On the same day, Wang also held talks with Lejone Mpotjoana, minister of foreign affairs and international relations of Lesotho.
