Chinese car brands have swiftly transitioned from a novelty to a significant presence on the streets of Peru with advanced technology and modern designs, marking a notable shift in the country's automotive market.

Peru's bustling capital, Lima, known for its congested traffic, has seen a surge in the popularity of Asian car brands among drivers navigating the city's busy streets. The influx of Chinese vehicles, a relatively recent addition to the market, has steadily increased over the past decade, introducing Peruvians to a fresh selection of automotive options.

Wang Pei, general manager of Chinese automaker Dongfeng Automobile in Peru, highlighted the remarkable transformation in Peruvians' perception of Chinese vehicles.

"Peruvians' perception of Chinese vehicles now is very different from when I first arrived in Peru. Back then, Peruvians didn't particularly appreciate Chinese vehicles or brands - they might have thought Chinese technology was inferior, or that we only competed on low prices. But now the entire market environment has changed," Wang said.

Chancay Port, a project within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative framework and located north of Lima, is a fast and cost-effective link between South America and China. In January this year, Chancay Port marked a significant milestone by receiving its first shipment of electric vehicles from the Chinese mainland. This event symbolized a shift in the delivery of advanced technology vehicles to South America, highlighting the growing economic ties between Peru and China.

"Dongfeng vehicles have significantly improved, as have all Chinese brands. We're no longer just competing on quality and price. With this new Chancay Port operation, we've greatly reduced costs. Now, our entire vehicle pricing structure offers real value - local customers get both quality and affordable prices," Wang said.

Changan, DFSK and JAC are the top three Chinese brands selling in Peru, followed by Jetour, Geely and Chery.

The blend of affordability and advanced technology in these Chinese vehicles has revolutionized the driving experience, capturing the attention of consumers.

In the first quarter of this year, Chinese car sales accounted for a significant quarter of all vehicles sold, showcasing the growing popularity of these brands in the Peruvian market. As the market diversifies with electric vehicles, hybrids, and traditional gas-powered models, the appeal of Chinese cars continues to grow.

Potential buyers like Marlene Flores express enthusiasm for the technological advancements and environmental benefits offered by Chinese vehicles, highlighting the need for increased adoption to promote sustainability.

"Many people definitely do not know about Chinese cars, including not only the models with technology but the electric vehicles that now have charge points all over Lima. We need to increase their use for the sake of the environment," said Flores.

"They are very attractive because the cars are much more modern and high-end that allows the user to have a totally different driving experience. With all that comes a technological education for the Peruvian," said Sergio Rosas, sales manager of Dongfeng Peru.

Esko Aho, former Finnish prime minister, has stressed the importance of mutual understanding and cooperation between Asia and Europe, values he said underpin the importance of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2026.

In an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), Esko Aho, who was in Boao, south China's Hainan Province, for the BFA annual conference, emphasized the need for greater understanding between Asia and Europe as the two continents pursue closer economic and political ties.

"I think when looking at Europe and Asia, there are a lot of similarities. We are technology-oriented. We have a lot of common interests to keep world trade to be fair and open. But then we also have differences. It's very important that Asia understands European minds and vice versa. For us, it's very important to understand the Asian minds in order to do good business, or to be good in politics, you have to be able to recognize these differences," he said.

On the role that Finland and the Nordic region can play in building up that understanding, he emphasized their predisposition to trust.

"The level of trust is very high in all Nordic countries. That is something which is making a difference in Europe, but I can say that even globally, it's very difficult to identify any other part of the globe where a level of trust between people is so high as it is in the Nordic region," he said.

Founded in 2001, the BFA has grown into a key platform for addressing Asian issues and strengthening cooperation both within the region and globally.

Aho described the forum as a window for the world to better understand China and a platform for exchanging views on global trends, adding that such dialogue helps foster cooperation and the development of common rules.

"It has been a window to see what's going on in China. For foreigners, it's a great opportunity to understand internal processes in China. This is a place for dialogue, so that we foreigners, we feel that when we are coming here, we are able to tell from our perspective, how do we see the world's global trends and developments. And in that way, let's say, to learn, to work together, which is so important in the future, because I cannot see that we are able to solve the problems of the world without having collaboration. We need collaboration and common rules," he said.

Themed "Shaping a Shared Future: New Dynamics, New Opportunities, New Cooperation", this year's BFA annual conference is scheduled to run from Tuesday to Friday. It will focus on four core topics and feature more than 50 sub-forums, roundtables and dialogue sessions.
