The Taiwan region's attempt to seek secession by military means with the backing of external forces is bound to arouse the public opinion backlash, said Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.
Polls on the Taiwan island show that, in the year since Lai Ching-te took office, 53 percent of the respondents are dissatisfied with his governance, the highest in nearly 30 years for a Taiwan regional leader's one-year mark in office. The regime's handling of cross-Strait relations and response to the U.S. tariff hikes are particularly questioned, with dissatisfaction rates in these two categories both exceeding 50 percent.
"Since the Lai Ching-te regime came to power, it has stubbornly stuck to a Taiwan secession stance, seeking separatism by relying on external forces and military means, while vigorously hyping up the so-called 'mainland threat.' It has repeatedly fabricated the false narrative of 'democracy versus authoritarianism,' stoking cross-Strait confrontation, pushing for economic decoupling and severing ties, and exacerbating efforts to block and restrict cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation," said Chen.
"Regarding high tariffs imposed by the United States, the Lai's regime has knelt down all the way, further evidencing its role as a professional seller of Taiwan. Its retrogressive policies, aptness for internal power struggles and impotence to govern have seriously deviated from the mainstream public opinion on the island, gravely impairing the vital interests of Taiwan businesses and people. Local media have described 2025 as a 'year of disappointment' and 'year of anger,' while multiple opinion polls clearly reflect the strong deploration for him from all sectors of Taiwan society. If the Lais continue to stubbornly go their way, they are bound to arouse public opinion backlash," he said.
