China's railway system is expected to handle 953 million passenger trips during this year's 62-day summer rush beginning on Tuesday, a surge of 5.8 percent year on year, China Railway said on Monday.

The company said that the average daily number of passenger trip is expected to reach 15.37 million in the summer travel season.

To accommodate the surge in travel demand, more than 11,500 passenger trains are scheduled to be put into service each day, including 402 additional trains, up 5.5 percent from the same period of last year.

New high-speed lines such as the Qianjiang section of the Chongqing-Xiamen line, as well as new railway stations will be put to test during the summer travel season, and the Beijing-Shenyang section of the Beijing-Harbin line and the Shanghai-Kunming line will operate at a speed of up to 350 kilometers per hour, China Railway said.

Railway authorities will add more trains for tourists, especially gray-haired tourists, on routes from Harbin to Fuyuan, and from Kunming to Xishuangbanna, and on rail routes in northwest China's remote Xinjiang regoin. The rail operator will also put into service cross-border trains on routes leading to countries such as Mongolia, Russia, Laos and Vietnam.

China's official ticketing platform, 12306, will provide more ticket packages, such as multi-use, periodic, and themed travel passes. Discounted fares, as low as 40-percent off, will be also be available on the ticketing app.
