MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Pete Crow-Armstrong hit two home runs for his fifth multi-homer game this season, powering the Chicago Cubs past the Minnesota Twins 8-1 on Thursday.
Crow-Armstrong, whose first-half breakout earned him a starting spot for the National League All-Star team, went 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs to help the Cubs avoid a three-game sweep. Colin Rea (7-3) won his third straight start with a three-hitter over a season-high seven innings, and Minnesota native Michael Busch added two RBIs.
Rea allowed only a fifth-inning home run by Kody Clemens, as the 35-year-old right-hander turned in his longest start since seven shutout innings for Milwaukee last Aug. 18.
Paddack, who considers Rea a mentor dating to their time together with San Diego for his advice on recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery, gave up 11 hits and six runs. He is 1-5 in his last 10 starts, with the Twins winning three.
REDS 6, MARLINS 0
CINCINNATI (AP) — Spencer Steer homered and Nick Lodolo pitched six strong innings as Cincinnati beat Miami to earn a split in the four-game series.
Elly De La Cruz singled for his 100th hit of the season, stole second, and scored on Austin Hays’ single to put Cincinnati ahead 1-0 in the first.
Steer’s solo home run, his 11th of the season, made the score 2-0 in the second.
Cal Quantrill retired 11 straight following Steer’s homer, but the Reds loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth.
Lodolo (6-6) allowed only three hits with no walks and four strikeouts. It’s the seventh time this season that the Reds’ lefty allowed one run or fewer.
De La Cruz singled in a run and TJ Friedl raced home on a throwing error by right fielder Dane Myers to make it 4-0 in the sixth. Hays followed with a two-run single.
Quantrill (3-8) pitched five-plus innings and allowed five earned runs, the most since April 19 when he allowed seven at Philadelphia.
YANKEES 6, MARINERS 5, 10 INNINGS
NEW YORK (AP) — Anthony Volpe scored the winning run with an acrobatic slide on Aaron Judge’s shallow sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and New York rallied past Seattle after Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo took a no-hitter into the eighth.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled leading off the eighth for New York’s first hit. Woo quickly allowed another single and was lifted after Austin Wells’ sacrifice fly shaved Seattle’s lead to 5-1.
Pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton made it 5-3 with a two-run homer off Matt Brash, and the Yankees were down to their final strike before tying it on Wells’ two-run single off All-Star closer Andrés Muñoz in the ninth.
It was the sixth blown save for Muñoz in 27 chances this season, and the first win for the Yankees when trailing by at least five runs in the eighth inning or later since beating Texas on June 29, 2016.
New York completed a three-game sweep in a series between American League playoff contenders and won its fourth straight following its second six-game skid since mid-June.
RED SOX 4, RAYS 3
BOSTON (AP) — Ceddanne Rafaela hit a go-ahead, two-run double during a three-run seventh inning and Boston earned their season-high seventh straight win by beating Tampa Bay.
Boston starter Walker Buehler gave up three runs off five hits, including two home runs, over six innings. Chris Murphy (1-0) and Garrett Whitlock pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, and Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the ninth to pick up his 16th save and 1,300th strikeout.
Junior Caminero hit a two-run home run and Ha-Seong Kim added a solo homer for the Rays.
Tampa’s Taj Bradley allowed one run off two hits over six innings, striking out five. But reliever Bryan Baker (3-3), who was making his Rays debut after being traded by the Baltimore Orioles, surrendered all three Boston runs in the seventh.
CARDINALS 8, NATIONALS 1
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Miles Mikolas pitched two-hit ball into the sixth inning, helping St. Louis beat Washington.
Willson Contreras homered and Alec Burleson drove in two runs as St. Louis won the rubber game in the three-game series. Brendan Donovan had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.
St. Louis (50-44) went 5-1 against Washington this year, winning the season series against the Nationals (38-55) for the first time since 2021.
Mikolas (5-6) struck out six and walked one in 5 2/3 innings. It was his first win since May 23.
Jacob Young drove in Washington’s only run on a fielder’s choice in the eighth.
Nationals right-hander Michael Soroka (3-7) worked four innings of two-run ball. He threw 91 pitches, 57 for strikes.
ORIOLES 3, METS 1, 1ST GAME

BALTIMORE (AP) — Jordan Westburg homered and drove in three runs as Baltimore defeated New York to sweep a doubleheader.
Alex Jackson doubled twice and scored two runs in his Baltimore debut to help the Orioles win for the fifth time in six games. They took both ends of a twinbill for the first time since June 2016 against Tampa Bay at home.
In the opener, Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run drive in the eighth inning for his first career pinch-hit homer, sending Baltimore to a 3-1 victory.
The split-admission doubleheader was scheduled to make up Wednesday night’s game, which was postponed due to a forecast of inclement weather.
ATHLETICS 5, BRAVES 4, 11 INNINGS
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Tyler Soderstrom opened Thursday night’s game with a long home run and closed it with a one-out RBI single to give the Athletics an 11-inning victory over Atlanta.
Soderstrom went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, his winning hit plating automatic runner Brent Rooker.
The Braves have lost 11 of 14 games and haven’t won a series since they swept the New York Mets in a three-game homestand June 17-19. Atlanta has since lost five series since then and split one with the Mets.
Soderstrom’ 445-foot three-run homer to right field in the first inning gave the A’s a 3-0 lead.
JP Sears, making his 100th career appearance, retired the first 11 Braves batters he faced, five by strikeouts. Back-to-back doubles by Austin Riley and Sean Murphy put the Braves on the scoreboard with two outs in the fourth to end Sears’ streak of 15 1/3 scoreless innings, which was the second-longest active one to Detroit’s Tarik Skubal (18).
RANGERS 11, ANGELS 4
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Marcus Semien went 4 for 5 and Corey Seager hit a two-run single in a seven-run third inning to help Texas rout Los Angeles for a split of their four-game series.
Patrick Corbin (6-7) allowed two runs and seven hits with six strikeouts in five innings to win his second consecutive start. Jacob Latz allowed a run over 3 1/3 innings of relief with six strikeouts.
Semien had three hits with an RBI and two runs scored in the first three innings. Seager went 2 for 3 as seven of nine starters drove in at least one run for Texas during a 13-hit outburst.
Adolis García launched his 11th homer — a two-run shot off Carson Fulmer in the eighth for the Rangers’ final runs.
Jack Kochanowicz (3-9) lasted just 2 2/3 innings for Los Angeles, allowing eight runs. Fulmer gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings of relief.
PADRES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado hit leadoff homers and San Diego beat Arizona to split a four-game series.
Machado led off the fifth inning with his 16th homer to give San Diego a 3-2 lead. Gavin Sheets then singled to chase Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez (3-6), and Xander Bogaerts doubled off reliever Juan Morillo to score Sheets.
Arizona cut it to 4-3 on Geraldo Perdomo’s RBI double in the seventh. Jeremiah Estrada pitched the eighth for San Diego, and Robert Suarez worked the ninth for his major league-leading 27th save. Adrian Morejon (7-3) was the winner.
