China urged Japan to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in the country following an attack against two Chinese men on the street of Tokyo on Thursday morning.

Four unidentified men in their 20s attacked the victims with iron pipes in Chiyoda Ward in the Japanese capital at around 9:00 local time, and fled the scene in a car with a Kansai license plate, according to media report.

The two victims, sustaining serious head injuries, and bleeding, said they had no prior acquaintance with the attackers, and no demands for money or anything else were made, the report said.

"The Chinese Embassy in Japan has expressed concerns to Japan immediately after the incident, and is now further verifying the situation. We urge Japan to take effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens," Guo Jiakun, a spokesman of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a press briefing on the day.
