China's 2025 summer box office had surpassed 6.3 billion yuan (about 870 million U.S. dollars) as of Saturday, according to the latest data.

The war-themed film "Dead To Rights" leads the pack at over 1.1 billion yuan (about 150 million U.S. dollars) in earnings. It tells the story of a group of Chinese civilians who took refuge in a photography studio during the Japanese aggressors' brutal occupation of Nanjing in 1937.

The summer movie season has continued to thrive, driving the Chinese film market to over 4 billion yuan (about 560 million U.S. dollars) in July.

A highlight came on July 27, when the box office topped 300 million yuan (about 41.66 million U.S. dollars), the first time in 154 days that daily earnings reached this milestone since February 23.

Overall, July featured five days with daily box office exceeding 200 million yuan (about 27.78 million U.S. dollars) and 19 days exceeding 100 million yuan (about 13.89 million U.S. dollars).

According to online data, as of July 31, the Chinese film market in July recorded an attendance of 107 million, with a total of 12.99 million screenings.

Experts say that July's strong performance has fueled the momentum of the summer movie season into its second half.

"I think the 2025 summer box office could reach about 12 billion yuan (about 1.67 billion U.S. dollars). Chinese films have regained the market and captured audiences with their quality and reputation. This is the biggest surprise from July, and it sets a great tone for the summer market in August," said Zhang Jinfeng, deputy editor-in-chief of China Film News.
